The dog who mauled to death Adelaide Oval Hotel’s resident pup Charli has been euthanised, following an extensive investigation by Port Adelaide Enfield Council.

In October last year, the five-month-old Cavalier King Charles spaniel was mauled to death while on an afternoon walk.

Charli was with one of her carers when she was attacked by another dog.

She was rushed to a nearby vet, and treated for a day, but later succumbed to her injuries.

Port Adelaide Enfield Mayor Claire Boan said, following the incident, council officers found the dog responsible with its owner in the Hampstead Gardens area.

Council then obtained a warrant to seize the dog.

“Following the seizure of the dog and a full investigation, it was determined that the dog was unduly dangerous in accordance with the Dog & Cat Management Act 1995,” Ms Boan said.

“As a result of this, a destruction order was issued and the dog was euthanised this week.”

Ms Boan said a decision had not yet been made about potential penalties for breaches of the Dog & Cat Management Act by the animal’s owner.

She said public assistance had been crucial in finding the offending dog.

“It is vital that we get as much information from the public as possible to enable us to investigate any dog attack,” she said.

“Thanks to help from the public, we received information from witnesses that assisted our community safety officers in identifying the alleged dog and owner involved in the attack.”

A spokeswoman for the Adelaide Oval Hotel declined to comment on the matter.

In October, an Adelaide Oval Hotel statement said Charli “had quickly become part of the fabric of the hotel and was loved by all”.

“To lose her in such a way is heartbreaking. We will miss her so much,” the statement read.

Charli was the hotel’s welcome dog from its opening in September and was inspired by South Australian wineries where house dogs have become a popular addition.
