The victim of a terrifying rape in a CBD carpark last year has told a court she never wants to know her attacker’s face after she was dragged by her hair and pinned to the ground.

What happens after a sexual assault?

The victim of a terrifying rape in Adelaide’s CBD has told a court that she never wants to remember her evil attacker’s face.

Cameron Hand, 51, showed little emotion as his victim’s impact statement was read aloud in the Adelaide District Court on Monday.

The statement was provided to the court at the victim’s wish to not “know his face”.

“Every time I put my children in the car, I worry that I will be attacked from behind,” she said.

“I’ve changed the way I dress, I feel like it’s my fault that I wore a skirt that night – I no longer wear skirts.

“If I was wearing pants, it might not have happened like it did.

“All I know of him is his cap and hoodie and I want it to stay that way.”

In a direct statement to Hand, the victim condemned his actions saying it has left her with a lifetime of trauma just because he wanted “five minutes of fun.”

“What the f**k is wrong with you,” she asked.

“There is no excuse for doing this … I hope you use your time in jail and how your choices affect an entire person’s life.”

The court heard Hand had followed his victim back to a carpark after she had enjoyed a night out with friends, before assaulting her in October, 2022.

Hand, who was riding a bicycle, made the decision to follow the victim to the car, the court heard.

After the victim was pushed to the ground, she was dragged by the hair and pinned her to the ground, before the attacker raped her.

“It was only when a taxi approached them from a nearby street the defendant let go of the victim and rode away,” the prosecutor said.

“This was brazen and opportunistic offending on a young woman, late at night.”

Gerry Bowen, defence counsel for Hand, submitted that his client has felt “ashamed” for this offending and that he has “let everyone down”.

Hand in May pleaded guilty to one count of engaging in sexual intercourse with a person without consent.

The matter will return for sentencing later this year.
