The Aquatic Centre, city libraries and community centres across the CBD and North Adelaide will shut their doors from 10pm tonight in response to new bans on indoor gatherings of more than 100 people.
Adelaide Town Hall events, tours and functions will also be cancelled, however, that does not extend to council meetings.
Adelaide Lord Mayor Sandy Verschoor said the closures would protect the health and wellbeing of the community in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak.
“Cautionary measures such as these facility closures are only in place to protect the community and our employees, and to support coronavirus containment efforts,” Ms Verschoor said.
“We don’t take this decision lightly but we’re confident it’s the right decision as part of our duty of care to the community during this unique and challenging time.”
The closure affects wedding bookings and the council will “work through” cancellations with couples.
The Advertiser has asked for clarification about whether Aquatic Centre memberships would be suspended.
The decision comes days after the council decided to develop a support package to help ratepayers overcome the social, cultural and economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
That includes investigating payment plans and reducing the cost of fees and permits.
