WHAT does an old city pub and vintage store have in common with a laneway restaurant and café with pet rabbits?

They’re all winners of The City awards.

The winners across the 16 categories — such as best restaurant, best fashion retailer and best Adelaide event — have been announced tonight at a cocktail reception at Keith Murdoch House, home to The City and The Advertiser.

A panel of judges from News Corp’s free weekly publication, The City, and award sponsor Adelaide City Council selected the winners from the finalist fields, which were determined by public vote.

The City editor Elisa Black said the winners represented Adelaide’s tried and true, as well as the next generation of local legends.

“We have businesses that have been around for decades, and some that have just turned a year old, so it’s a great representation of the old and new spots that give the city and North Adelaide its buzz,” she said.

Those who scored top honours in the third annual awards included Udaberri for Best Small Bar (the Leigh St haunt also took out this category in the 2015 awards), the 180-year-old Ed Castle (Best Live Music venue), Peel Street (Best Restaurant) and Midwest Trader (Best Fashion Retailer).

Inducted into the Retail Hall of Fame was Adelaide Central Market stall Charlesworth Nuts, the original Charlesworth store established 83 years ago by Herb and Doris Charlesworth.

Meanwhile, Hindley St oasis Peter Rabbit — also known as that place with the two pet bunnies — took out top honours in the Best Café category.

Brooke Newton, 19, made her first visit to Peter Rabbit on Monday with a group of friends and said she would definitely be going back.

“We had just heard about it though friends and on Instagram and it seemed like a nice, relaxed, different sort of café with the rabbits and outdoor feel,” she said.

“We really liked the atmosphere and the food was good.”

BEST RESTAURANT

Peel Street restaurant, 9 Peel St

INVENTIVE dishes, razor sharp service and an extensive domestic and international wine list make this laneways’s namesake restaurant a major player in Adelaide’s dining scene. Co-owner and kitchen head Jordan Theodoros also won The Advertiser Food Awards Chef of the Year in 2016. Haven’t been yet? Cancel your current dinner plans.

Peter Rabbit, 244 Hindley St

THIS cozy Hindley St hangout brings a touch of the suburbs to the city and redefines the traditional cafe model. It has deck chairs, fruit trees, grass (!) a basketball ring and pot plants; all this as well as superb coffee, wholesome dishes and raw smoothies. Owners Jack Nelligan, James McIntyre and Daniel Morton should be commended for envisioning such a place and bringing it to life, and also for thinking it would be a good idea to actually have rabbits.

BEST SMALL BAR

Udaberri, 11 Leigh St

ALL the small bars in town have Udaberri to thank for pioneering the small bar concept back in 2012 when it was much harder to get a license. Five years on and there’s still never an empty seat in the front window. Udaberri also took out this category in our inaugural awards in 2015.

Penny University, 1/7 Union St

SO many cafes in Adelaide do good coffee, we know this. To be truly good though, consistency is key. We can honestly say we’ve never had a bad brew from Penny’s, so thanks Foti for not only creating such a wonderful place but being a damn good barista, too.
