A man who was attacked by a group of men at Adelaide High on Friday night is in an induced coma with significant brain injuries, a court has heard.

An alleged attacker, who cannot be named, faced Adelaide Magistrates Court via videolink on Monday.

Magistrate Simon Smart suppressed the man’s identity, along with the victim, on the basis that it could hinder investigations.

The court heard the defendant had been charged based on a statement from a witness who was known to the man.

Police told the court the 24-year-old victim had been lured to Adelaide High where he was “set upon” by the man and other men.

“The assault was sustained, it was vicious and it sees the victim in a very dire state,” police said.

They alleged the defendant was a “major part” of enticing the man to the school and the subsequent attack.

Police said the prognosis for the victim was “not good” and it was “likely he will succumb to his injuries”, in which case the prosecution would pursue more serious charges.

The defendant’s lawyer, Stacey Carter, denied that her client was present at the attack.

She applied for bail on behalf of the man.

Police “strongly opposed” bail because they believed he could impede or interfere with ongoing investigations.

The victim was taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital after 10pm on Friday night and police were called to attend at about 11.40pm

A further hearing will be held later this week.
