Two cafes in Gawler have closed their doors in less than 24 hours, with one shutting up shop for good and another falling victim to a positive case of Covid-19.
After ten years in the business Hudsons Coffee Gawler has called it a day while Cafe Sia in Evanston has shuttered temporarily for a deep clean after a case entered the building.
It comes as hospitality businesses across the state grapple the spread of the Omicron Covid-19 variant and staffing shortages caused by workers becoming sick or being forced to isolate.
Hudsons Coffee Gawler posted on Facebook on Monday announcing the cafe was closing forever from 3pm.
The sudden closure triggered a massive response on social media with over 60 customers expressing they were upset the corner shop as well as well as thanking owner Ryan for his hospitality.
“If the walls could talk, I’ve laughed, cried, vented, and solved the world’s problems many a time over a coffee with friends, thank you Ryan and team, you will be missed,” Tracey Loveridge said.
“Well done being an important piece of the communityI’m sure you’ll be missed and looking forward to seeing what the next adventure will be,” Megan Jane said.
Local MP Tony Piccolo visited the cafe on its final day of business and said the Hudsons franchise was closing numerous stores.
“The franchise has closed down their Gawler cafe among many other across Australia, thank you to Ryan and all the staff for their service to the Gawler community for many years,” Mr Piccolo said.
On the same day Cafe Sia in Evanston announced it would be closed until further notice after it was the host to a Covid-19 positive case.
The family favourite cafe did not disclose whether the positive case was a staff member or customer but said it will announce its reopening soon.
A Facebook post quickly garnered over 150 comments containing messages of support for the family business which opened in 2013.
Adelaide’s northern suburbs and Gawler have high numbers of Covid-19 in comparison to other local government areas.
