A northern suburbs man was allegedly trying to groom a child when he was actually talking to an undercover cop, a court has heard.

Dennis Malcolm Rayner, 52, on Thursday faced the Adelaide Magistrates Court on four charges of communicating to make a child amenable to sexual activity and one of knowingly possessing child exploitation material.

Just hours before he was arrested yesterday afternoon Mr Rayner, of Gawler, was working out, posting a gym workout to his well-used online fitness profile.

Mr Rayner became the third northern suburbs man arrested and charged with the same offences in the space of two weeks.

There is no suggestion any of the allegations are linked.

A police prosecutor asked the court to restrict Mr Rayner’s use of internet and electronic devices and bar him from communicating with children.

He told auxiliary Magistrate Alfio Grasso Mr Rayner had been arrested after allegedly “interacting” with a “covert police officer”.

The arrest came on Wednesday night, after an investigation by detectives from the SA Joint Anti Child Exploitation Team, known as JACET.

JACET is a partnership between SA Police and the Australian Federal Police.

Court documents show Mr Rayner is alleged to have communicating to make a child amenable to sexual activity twice on May 24, again on May 25, and a fourth time on July 19.

He is also alleged to have been caught in the possession of child exploitation material on November 23, when he was arrested, according to the documents.

Taylor Falting, for Mr Rayner, made an application for bail for her client to live with his sister at Flagstaff Hill.

She told the court the house was lived in every second week by children of Mr Rayner’s brother, but different arrangements would be granted if her client was granted bail.

Mr Grasso granted Mr Rayner bail in the sum of $1000 and disallowed him from using the internet on any electronic devices other than to contact his lawyer.

He will next face court in March.
