A truck driver has been charged and a woman injured after a crash at a notorious Angle Vale intersection, which locals say urgently needs a safety upgrade.

The truck and car collided at the intersection of Heaslip and Curtis roads just before 10am on Wednesday morning.

The woman, who was the sole occupant of the car, was taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital with non life-threatening injuries while the truck driver escaped unharmed.

Constable Andy Lothian was first on the scene and said it appeared the truck heading west approached the intersection and failed to stop at a stop sign.

“He’ll be reported for the offence of driving without due care, we need to investigate also whether there was a towel covering his drivers side window, blocking his vision,” Constable Lothian said.

The meeting of Heaslip and Curtis roads has been the subject of local concern for more than a decade, with three deaths and more than 50 crashes occurring at the intersection since 2008.

One witness said the junction was notorious for accidents with a collisions at the site “just about every couple of months”.

Playford councillor Clint Marsh has been calling on the State Goverment to upgrade the intersection for three years and said there was strong community support for safety changes.

Cr Marsh said, despite Curtis Road being administered by the council, Heaslip Road fell under the State Government’s jurisdiction and gave it control over the intersection.

“While an upgrade has been scheduled, it could really be another two to three years before its completed, it's been recently delayed because of sewer works by SA Water,” Mr Marsh said.

“I’ve asked transport Minister Corey Wingard to come out to the area and see the urgency of the matter, but after five months I haven’t heard back” said Mr Marsh.

“The speed limit on Curtis Road was dropped to 60 about three weeks ago to match Heaslip Road which was good, but that’s really just an interim measure.”

“Regardless of any politics, I hope the Minister will see the importance of an upgrade.”

Mr Marsh said infrastructure throughout Angle Vale was lacking in general given the area’s projected population growth.
