Drug users will do 'twice as much crime' to get access to drugs despite a price increase

An alleged drug dealer caught with prescription drugs and other people’s bank cards has been trying to turn her life around.

Sonia Kay Doeuk, 42, was sentenced in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Friday after her life went on a downward spiral and she turned to drugs.

Police attended and searched Doeuk’s Lightsview home in October, 2019.

They found a quantity of prescription drugs, identification and bank cards belonging to other people, ammunition and a glass pipe.

Police also allegedly found 16g of MDMA, 100g of marijuana, methamphetamine, various mobile phones and tick lists (a record of debt owed to the dealer), as well as other drug-dealing indicators.

Officers charged Doeuk with four counts of trafficking, which the court heard were contested and would go to trial next year.

Doeuk, of Pooraka, had previously pleaded guilty to 11 charges, including possessing prescription drugs and unlawful possession.

Bronwyn Gibson, for Doeuk, told the court Doeuk’s life went on a downward spiral when her partner died by suicide in 2017.

“This was when her life really did take a turn for the worst and where her offending stems from,” Ms Gibson said.

“It was an extremely traumatic time.”

The court heard Doeuk was introduced to drugs and began taking methamphetamine.

“She’s in a relationship and has been for the last two years,” Ms Gibson said.

The court heard Doeuk, who is a mother-of-four and recently gave birth, had previously owned a cafe.

“She wishes to go back to work as a chef when she’s able to and also participate in further study,” Ms Gibson said.

“She is wanting to once again re-establish a stable life for herself and her children.”

The court heard Doeuk has attended drug and alcohol counselling since being released on home detention bail earlier this year.

Magistrate Kym Millard sentenced Doeuk to a 18-month good behaviour bond for $800.
Convictions were recorded.
