As one of the original crystal businesses in the state, Pete Waters and Barbara Dennes are the custodians of Crystal Wave which has been in Grange for over 30 years.

“We really encourage people to look around and we don't try to push the point of sale,” Mr Waters said.

“It doesn’t mater how you walk into the shop we just like to see you leave with a smile, it’s our motto.

“People like to come see our range, it’s one of if not the biggest range in Adelaide.”

Over the last three decades, Mr Waters has seen the market fluctuate with each new generation but says the most recent resurgence has been the biggest he’s seen.

“We don’t have email lists or a big following online," he said.

“But since the outbreak of Covid and things like TikTok, positive home decor has just become massive and we’ve seen that transpire into crystal purchases.

“We’re busier than ever and we’re trying to keep up with the new trends whether they last for a week, fortnight or month.

“Our demographic has changed, it was always that older demographic now it’s people of all ages.”

Mr Waters encouraged those who are seeking out crystals to do their research and support trusted businesses.

“There is a lot of fake on the market and things that aren’t what they seem to be,” he said.

“We’re not out to provide any instant gratification or any miracles, we sell tools and products with the intention to help you with the goals you are setting.

“There won’t be instant answers.”

After owning a salon for the better part of a decade, Shay Coulthard soon found another calling in life.

“I love home decor and found to be really drawn from the energy that crystals provide,” Ms Coulthard said.

“After I closed down my salon that’s where I really started my spiritual journey because I started to reflect on that time in my life.”

Now citing her “complete change of direction”, Ms Coulthard stays busy running her online crystal shop Earthluxe Crystals and is currently looking to expand into a shop front.

“It’s been so much freedom and I really enjoy the connection I have with the crystal community.

“I have also joined a few fairs and been busy at local markets as well as online sales.

“All of my pieces are hand selected and I try and get the highest quality that I can and I encourage my customers to go with their gut when they are picking out pieces, because that's when it means something.”

Despite selling her first store with the intention to retire, Remi Waters soon found herself giving it another crack.

“Retirement did not work for me because I was so used to working,” Ms Waters said.

“I landed on a little shop in Port Adeliade around 2011, after looking all over South Australia to a venue.”

Ms Waters says the early days of the shop were hard yards, trying to fill it as well as trying to promote the business.

“Port Adelaide wasn't known as a metaphysical destination, so it’s taken a while to get this show on the road.”

Ms Waters now works with her daughter Mel and granddaughter Emma and has noticed a real difference in the business in the last two years.

“We’ve head people travel from the Eyre Peninsula to come to our store, even people from England,” she said.

“We really put the process of the purchase into the customer’s hands, we encourage them to follow whatever draws them once they are in the shop and then we explain what it means.

“The crystal chooses you, you don’t choose the crystal.”
