Adelaide Hills residents will soon have access to a new $8.6 million emergency department in Mount Barker.

The State Government has appointed Design Inc and Turner and Townsend to plan the redesign of Mount Barker District Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital, with work due to be complete in late 2022.

A new renal unit opened at the hospital in July last year.

“We know there is a high demand for emergency services in Mount Barker, and this upgrade will ensure the local community can receive the best possible emergency care where and when they need it,” Health Minister Stephen Wade said.

“Patients will benefit from brand new equipment in a modern facility, with the new and larger ED having increased capacity to meet the rise in emergency presentations to the hospital.”

Barossa Hills Fleurieu Local Health Network chief executive officer Rebecca Graham said the Mount Barker emergency department redevelopment was an important milestone for the region.

“The existing Mount Barker Hospital ED faces significant challenges in terms of meeting the increased emergency demand in the region, which is why this redevelopment is an important step in planning for the future,” Ms Graham said.

“The new, purpose-built ED will significantly expand on Mount Barker’s current emergency service capability, optimise staff workflows and provide high-quality and efficient health care services that directly aligns to the needs of patients.”

The redevelopment will include emergency ambulance bays, dedicated triage and acute treatment areas and quiet spaces for relatives and vulnerable patients.

“We are extremely pleased to see planning work begin for the facility and for it to be available to our patients and community in the near future,” Ms Graham said.
