Mapped: 40+ new dining, accommodation and tourism experiences to explore across SA in 2022

Our state’s tourism and hospitality providers have been busy reinventing themselves to provide a host of new experiences in 2022. See the map and explore what’s on offer.

Calls for the tourism industry to reopen

It has been a long time coming but a new $2.5m Hills tourism destination that caters for beer and cheese lovers is finally ready to open.

The Grunthal Brew project on the old Grumpy’s Brewhaus site at Verdun will officially welcome visitors from February with the development including a new brewery, bar, restaurant and cheese cellar.

The business will be headlined by the Grünthal Brewery and Bar but also serve as a new home for family-owned Hesketh Wines and the Udder Delights Cheese Cellar, which will relocate from Hahndorf.

It is one of 40-plus new tourism and hospitality experiences hoped to entice tourists to travel South Australia in 2022, including a new $1m water park in Victor Harbor, new mountain bike trails at Mt Remarkable, boat tours along the Fleurieu Peninsula and an aerial adventure park at Kuitpo Forest.

Hesketh Wines managing director Jonathon Hesketh said the partnership aimed to create the state’s best microbrewery, cellar door and artisan produce meccas.

“We are beyond thrilled to open the door to a new home for Hesketh Wines and are equally excited to be joining forces with our friends Sheree and Saul Sullivan at Grünthal Brew and Udder Delights,” Mr Hesketh said.

“Being able to showcase what our incredible winemaking team produce is something we’ve aspired to for a long time. We couldn’t imagine a better place or way to present our wines.”

The Hesketh’s cellar door will showcase the winery’s Regional Selections range, including Adelaide Hills varieties such as pinot noir, chardonnay, nebbiolo bianco, sauvignon blanc and a vintage methode champenoise sparkling.

They will be complemented by the Hesketh limited releases from other premium South Australian growing regions, including Penola cabernet from Coonawarra, ebenezer shiraz and grenache from the Barossa, fiano from the Clare Valley and jimi’s ferment fumé blanc from Mount Gambier.

All of these will be available in flights paired with Udder Delights cheeses, by the glass and by the bottle.

Grünthal Brew founder Sheree Sullivan said Hesketh’s presence would ensure that the vast tourism, craft beer, food, cheese and wine venue would offer something for just about everyone.

“Hesketh is a small, family-owned producer of high quality, well-balanced, beautiful wines, Grünthal Brew strives to craft approachable, drinkable beer and Udder Delights has an enviable reputation for well-made, delicious cheese … and, as Jonathon says, it’s got to be a match made in heaven,” Ms Sullivan said.

“As we both share an uncompromising passion for quality and approach the way we do business in a similar fashion, we are delighted that Jonathon and Trish Hesketh and their team have chosen us as the home for their exciting new cellar door.”

The Grünthal Brew headquarter will be complemented by a casual, family-friendly eatery serving pizza and fun delicious food that pairs well with beer and wine, a dedicated conservatory for private function use and tourism experiences, including cheesemaking and beer making classes.

A landscaped backyard overlooking the Onkaparinga River will also offer plenty of room for kids to roam.
