A play tower, climbing walls, slides, swings and musical play stations will form part of a new $450,000 playground in Lobethal.

The Adelaide Hills Council has approved final concept designs for an adventure-based play space at Lobethal Bushland Park to replace equipment destroyed in the 2019 Cudlee Creek bushfires.

The playground is one of three announced for the region this financial year, with final design plans also drawn up for $360,000 play spaces in Lenswood and Greenhill.

Hills Mayor Jan-Claire Wisdom said rebuilding the Lobethal play space was a council priority.

“The new play space will provide an ideal starting point for exploring the park,” she said.

“We’ve had input from the community and used knowledge gained from other play spaces created near conservation areas,” she said.

“The new equipment has a natural but adventure-based feel to it and will be enjoyed by younger children and people of all abilities.”

Construction is estimated to be completed by the end of January 2022, Playgrounds worth $180,000 each will be built at Lenswood oval and at Yarrabee Road Reserve in Greenhill.

A highlight of the Yarrabee Rd play space will be a 4m skyclimber to allow children to try their climbing skills.

Final concept images were released by the council this month after extensive community consultation, with feedback from more than 130 participants.

Both play spaces will be disability accessible but also include equipment like monkey bars, slides, swings and climbing rope towers.

The council’s manager for sport and recreation Renee O’Connor said the playgrounds were funded as part of a major upgrade of play spaces in the Adelaide Hills.

“When playgrounds reach their end of use for life, that’s when we generally upgrade them,” she said.

Eight playgrounds will have been upgraded over the past three years, including Mt Torrens, Kersbrook, Charleston, Birdwood and Paracombe, Ms O’Connor said.

New playgrounds have also been announced for the Mount Barker District Council area.

This includes a new play space and skate park in Nairne, new junior equipment at Tremayne Road, Martindale and at Anembo Park.

Funding is also sought for a new nature play park at Keith Stephenson Park in Mount Barker.

Adventure and nature play will be at the forefront of this exiting new playground which was handed over to the contractor in September. The play space will be situated in the southern section of the park, near a reservoir and adjacent picnic and barbecue facilities.

YARRABEE ROAD, GREENHILL PLAY SPACE UPGRADE

The Yarrabee Road play space upgrade was identified in the council’s 2021/22 Annual Business Plan process and $180,000. Final community consultation is currently underway and will close December 7 with construction expected to begin early next year. A highlight of the play space will be a 4m skyclimber to allow children to push their climbing skills.

LENSWOOD OVAL PLAY SPACE

This community play space was developed with the help of 90 respondents, including Lenswood Primary School. It has a budget of $180,000 with final designs up for community feedback. Similar to Yarrabee Rd, this play space will have a focus on climbing activities and adventure play. Families will also be able to make use of a picnic setting.
