A man has appeared in court charged over a major drug bust at one of the state’s premier sporting facilities.

Leslie John Bajszi, 53, of Meadows, appeared in the Mt Barker Magistrates Court on Wednesday charged with trafficking a large commercial quantity of cannabis and other drug offences.

Charges were laid following a major drug raid at leading SA equestrian facility Kirkcaldy Park at Meadows in January.

At the time, police said officers searched the property on Razorback Rd at Meadows and allegedly found cannabis plants and dried cannabis packaged in boxes in two large sheds.

The Controlled Substances Act 1984 and Controlled Substances Regulations 2014 define a large commercial quantity of cannabis as 100 plants or more, or 2kg or more of “pure cannabis”.

The charge carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment and a maximum fine of $500,000.

Bajszi matter was adjourned on Wednesday and he was remanded on bail to appear again at a later date.

In March and following further investigation into the matter, a Meadows woman, 56, was reported for trafficking in a large commercial quantity of a controlled drug, cultivating cannabis and possessing prescribed equipment.

She will be summonsed to appear in court at a later date.

Kirkcaldy Park is regarded as the “hub” of the equestrian sport in South Australia.

The inter-school equestrian program involving hundreds of schoolchildren is held there regularly.

An iconic youth development scholarship program, initiated by dual Olympic gold medallist Gill Rolton, has been held at Kirkcaldy Park over 30 years, while interstate and overseas coaches regularly use the facility for training.
