A children’s ministry and men’s shed will be demolished to make room for a new $30 million aged care facility in Mount Barker.
Estia Investments has lodged a development application with Mount Barker District Council to build a 118-bed facility at 13-17 Victoria Road, the current site of Mount Barker Baptist Church.
If approved, the healthcare provider will commence construction late next year, following the church’s lease expiration in June.
In a report, planning consultant Joshua Skinner of URPS, said the site had been chosen in recognition of Mount Barker’s growing population, which is expected to reach 56,710 by 2036.
“The proposed Mount Barker facility will provide a high quality living environment to people from all walks of life,” he said.
“The facility is designed and will be managed in a way to provide flexible homelike environments, allowing residents to socialise, maintain skills and maintain some degree of independence as they wish.”
According to development plans, two significant trees would need to be removed and two existing building demolished to make room for the two-level development.
It would include a hairdresser, a cafe and wellness centre, as well as a multipurpose room for celebrations and training.
Accommodation, meanwhile, would consist of six individual houses or wings, each with 18 to 20 residential rooms positioned around courtyards.
Each rooms comes with access to gardens and will typically contain a bed, lounge, entertainment unit and a private bathroom.
Mr Skinner said the proposed facility would provide long-term accommodation for seniors who require some level of assistance or care.
This includes the provision of 24/7 nursing care and access to in-house medical and allied health professionals.
“This service will reduce the need for residents to visit a hospital as doctors or specialists will be able to visit the site and provide basic treatment … when needed,” Mr Skinner said.
