Schnitzel VK, Doh-nut and Neville Patchy Mcgee Tisdall may be among the State’s most unique dog names. But it’s an old-time classic that continues to capture the attention of dog owners across SA.

The Dog and Cat Management Board has revealed the top 10 dog names of 2020, with Bella – meaning beautiful in Italian – emerging as the clear favourite for the third year in a row.

Charlie, Molly, Max and Ruby rounded out the top five.

Sarah Hill of Hahndorf, the proud owner of five-year-old Brittany Spaniel Bella, said her playful pooch was living up to her name.

“We got her from this Italian man called Joe and his wife Rosa … and he was the one who originally named her Bella because she was beautiful,” Ms Hill said.

“She definitely beautiful and tends to attract a lot of attention as she has such a friendly face and you don’t see a lot of Brittany’s around.

“She can be a bit naughty but she’s mostly a beautiful family dog and a great companion who loves to just lie by your feet.”

David Parkin, Chairperson Dog and Cat Management Board said the name data had been collected via Dogs and Cats Online, a central data for registering dogs, cats, breeders, microchip and desexing information.

“Dogs and Cats Online amalgamated and replaced the 68 separate council registers in 2018, encouraging cross council collaboration,” he said.

“It is now easier to find owners because you only need to search the one register.”

The data base also identified the top 10 cat names, with Luna crowned the clear favourite, followed by Bella, Charlie, Missy and Coco.

The most unusual pet names registered in 2020, included Neville Patchy Mcgee Tisdall, 8Ball, Gnocchi Zena, Schnitzel VK and Mums bad dog, My good dog.
