Come and play at Hahndorf’s new family-friendly cafe

You don’t have to worry about spilt coffee or food crumbs in one of the Adelaide’s Hills newest family-friendly cafes, which encourages messy play in a daycare like setting.

Getting down right messy with a good cup of coffee has proven a winning formula for one of the Adelaide Hills newest family-friendly business ventures.

Mother of three Samantha White is the founder of newly launched Hahndorf Come and Play, which provides a daycare-like experience in a low-key, cafe setting.

Mrs White said her 15-year experience as an early childhood educator served as a background for her business venture.

“People these days are so busy, especially parents, which means they miss out on quality time with their kids. It’s not that they don’t want to play with them, it’s just often that work has to come first,” she said.

“That’s why I created Hahndorf Come and Play – a place where parents, carers and guardians can come, either by themselves or in a group, and just have fun with their children.

“It’s not like a normal play cafe where you just sit, have a coffee and watch your kids play. “Our concept is that we actually want the parents to sit down with their kids, wanting to do something with them – playing with them, talking to them, you name it.”

So far, the new business model has proven a success, with the cafe now solely dedicating weekends to party bookings.

Throughout the week, the cafe is open between the hours of 9.30am to 12.30pm, to coincide with nap time.

“Since we opened, the response has been fantastic, which shows the community has really embraced our little new business,” Mrs White said.

“In fact, it’s not just locals. We’ve had people from Port Adelaide and Victor Harbour come in for a play and we had groups use our cafe as a central meeting point, as we’re ideally located just a 20 minute drive from locations such as Adelaide, Blackwood, Strathalbyn and Murray Bridge.

“The one thing I didn’t anticipate was how many people love craft, which has let to us hosting craft night just for mums.”

Hahndorf Come and Play is at 32 Mount Barker Road, next to Gallery Gifts, which is operated by Mrs White’s parents.
