Stirling will soon be home to a new Aldi discount store despite years of protest from residents.

Aldi has confirmed it will open its $7.2m Pomona Road store in Stirling on Wednesday May 26.

The store will operate from 8.30am to 8pm, Monday,Wednesday and Fridays, 8.30am to 9pm on Thursdays, 8am to 5pm on Saturdays and 11am to 5pm on Sunday.

An advert announcing the official opening of the store will run in Wednesday's edition of The Advertiser.

“We are excited to bring our unique shopping experience to the Stirling and Adelaide Hills community,” a spokesman said.

“Construction is well under way, with the building shell and roof now completed.

“We anticipate the store will open in late May 2021 (and) we will continue to update the community.”

The store has been the cause of controversy for almost two years after development plans were announced in 2019 with a consultation period of only two weeks.

Residents deemed the site inappropriate but an appeal to the Adelaide Hills Council to revoke its development approval was denied.

The township has two existing supermarkets – Woolworths and Foodland.

Spokesman for the Stirling District Residents Association, John Hill, said there had been public outcry since development plans were announced.

“Many people are not opposed to an Aldi supermarket ... but this site is zoned at the fringe of the business area, specifically not for this type of development,’’ Mr Hill said.

“This site is not in the central business area and is specifically set aside in the plan for offices or nursing homes or retirement villages, which we do need in Stirling.”
