A new multimillion-dollar shopping precinct could be on the cards for Mount Barker, bringing with it hundreds of new jobs.

Peet Bluestone has lodged a development application with Mount Barker District Council to construct a 24/7 supermarket and speciality shops, as well as a fast food restaurant along Wellington Road.

The project is estimated to be worth $13,589,350 and could see the creation of almost 400 jobs annually.

The majority would be employed by supermarket franchise Coles and an integrated Liquorland.

There will also be room for sleeved speciality tenancies and a free standing shop in the form of a restaurant with takeaway and drive through.

According to a report to council by the developer, the shopping precinct would service the town’s growing southern corridor, specifically residents in the Bluestone Estate.

“The need, demand and impact assessment indicates that the proposed Bluestone shopping centre is supportable by the market and addresses a need for a centre of its scale and composition to ensure the residents of the southern growth corridor have adequate access to supermarket and convenience based retailing,” the reports states.

The precinct will also include a restaurant with takeaway and drive through facilities.

“(The proposal will) generate significant levels of new employment in the Mount Barker municipality, including 32 jobs during the construction phase and 181 jobs per annum on an ongoing basis for the operation of the new retail shops and services.

“Multiplier effects increase the employment benefits to 107 jobs and 284 jobs respectively.

“These new jobs will contribute to the council’s employment targets and strategy to build a greater level of local economic self-sufficiency.”

The development will also see the construction of 269 carparking spaces and the set up of 19 bicycle racks to accommodate 38 bikes.

Seven tree – six of which have been deemed significant - will also be removed during construction.
