A hoon was slammed by a magistrate for his reckless decision in travelling at an “extraordinary” speed and to find a racetrack if he wants to do it again.
Dylan Shane Michael Irwin, 33, was sentenced to a good behaviour bond for travelling at over double the speed limit in a high-powered sports bike.
The Adelaide Magistrates Court heard a speed camera detected a Suzuki motorcycle ridden by Irwin travelling at 169km/h in an 80km/h zone on Gorge Rd at Paracombe.
A prosecutor told the court Gorge Rd was a particularly windy, unsafe road to travel at that speed.
Irwin, of Elizabeth Grove, pleaded guilty to driving at extreme speed.
Heidi Salvemini, for Irwin, said her client had been raised in speed racing and had over 16 years’ experience in speed racing motorbikes.
“He’s certainly well experienced to manage a vehicle at that speed,” she said.
The court heard Irwin, a father-of-three, had since sold his bikes and car in preparation for his lengthy disqualification.
Magistrate Ben Sale said there was an inherent danger when someone travelled at such an “extraordinary” speed.
“That is a speed that really must be reserved for racetracks,” he said.
“When you were travelling at 169km/h, you placed yourself and anybody who might have been unexpectedly or unseen by you on the roadway at risk.
“Going at the speed, any problem with that motorcycle you would have likely ended up in very bad shape if not dead.”
Mr Sale said he hoped Irwin would have some thought to what effect it would have had on his children.
“They would have puzzled their entire life ‘why did dad do that? Why was that worth him taking that risk’,” he said.
“You can’t afford to be taking those sorts of risks, there’s too many people who depend on you.”
“If you want to get a thrill of accelerating hard on a motorcycle … find a racetrack to do it.”
Mr Sale sentenced Irwin to a $100, 18-month good behaviour bond.
A conviction was recorded.
Irwin was also disqualified from driving for two years.
