A man who was part of a group who forced their way into a unit in Adelaide’s northeast attacked a young woman with a machete while demanding money, police say.
The woman was at the Orlando Ave home in Hampstead Gardens when police allege a man known to her first knocked on the door and asked for money just before 4am on Saturday night. The victim declined and the man left.
Police allege a short time later that a group of men, armed with weapons, returned to the home and forced their way in before demanding money.
The man known to the woman allegedly attacked her with a machete before the group fled, leaving the woman to be taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Two windows at the front of the unit were smashed in the attack but it is understood police believe the group may have accessed the property by jumping over a back fence.
When police arrived they found a Christies Beach man, 21, who was arrested and charged with serious criminal trespass and assault causing harm.
The Advertiser understands he had fled from the scene and officers arrested him at the front of the nearby Gaza Football Club.
It is also understood police found a bag of marijuana outside the front of the unit.
Jodie Tynan, 58, a nearby resident on Orlando Ave, said she was woken by “a lot of yelling and angry voices”.
“It was just getting louder and louder and louder,” she said.
“It escalated ... with smashing glass (and) very loud banging noises like a car door slamming.”
Ms Tynan said she didn’t hear what was being said apart from a “few profanities”.
“And then the woman started screaming and then just as we were about to ring the police… the police started to arrive anyway,” she said.
“We ended up with four police cars and an ambulance out the front.”
The resident said there was another incident at the same house last Thursday with a lot of “yelling and screaming”.
Police investigations were continuing with several suspects still on the run.
The arrested man was refused bail and will appear in Adelaide Magistrates Court on Monday.
