A former Pembroke Old Scholars player is believed to be the other man involved in fight during local footy game

Officials have explained their next steps, as well as who they think may be the spectator involved in a stoush that forced a Friday night footy match to be abandoned.

A former Pembroke Old Scholars player is believed to be the spectator involved in a scuffle at an Adelaide Footy League game on Friday night with investigations continuing into what caused the tiff.

During the fourth quarter of the clash between Scotch OC and Pembroke OS, leading goalkicker Max Marslen, and a man who is believed to be a former Pembroke OS player, got into a physical altercation.

The 27-year-old forward and the spectator got into a scuffle on the boundary with players, from both teams, and other spectators trying to pull them apart.

Adelaide Footy League chief John Kernahan said the missing piece of information at this time is what led to the physical interaction.

“What is missing from this at this point in time is trying to understand what interaction was apparent between the spectator and the player because players don’t just enter into a scuffle with someone on the other side of the fence,” he said.

“We are to understand the spectator is a former player of Pembroke Old Scholars from 2018.

“The challenge for our clubs, who are all facilitated by well meaning volunteers, is being aware of who troublemakers are.”

Marslen was shown a red card as a result of the incident and the game was then called early.

Pembroke OS led the affair 14.14 (98) to 1.5 (11) at the time of abandonment and will receive the two premiership points for a win.

Mr Kernahan said it won’t be until they have “enough relevant information” that they will be able to deal with the matter properly.

“The Scotch OC player will appear before a tribunal of the league as per normal protocols,” he said.

“However, we will also invite all interested parties to contribute in what is fortunately not a regular occurrence.

“How and when that plays out will be determined once we have enough information to be comfortable that we have enough relevant information.”

Mr Kernahan said the league has a “well documented” code of conduct and is constantly brought up with clubs.

“While it would appear to have failed, and badly in this instance, we take comfort that our clubs in the main are diligent in this area,” he said.

Scotch OC Football Club president Nick Fuss and Pembroke Old Scholars Football Club president Kathy Carruthers both told The Advertiser their clubs would co-operate fully with the league’s investigation into Friday night’s incident.
