‘You paid how much?!’ Customer absolutely slogged for basic cafe breakfast

You won’t believe how much two bacon and egg rolls and two iced coffees cost this one diner.

British tourist slams common Aussie cafe rule

Another day, another article about the crazy cost of living, and this time, it seems even a breakfast classic isn’t safe.

And one cafe diner was left in total shock when they were given an “absolutely crazy” bill.

Sorry, how much?

How much would you expect to pay for two bacon and egg rolls and two iced coffees?

We’ll open the guessing at $40?

Nope, higher!

$50?

Try again.

$60…?

Ha, keep climbing!

“For the doubters: Yes, I really paid $77 for two bacon and egg rolls and two iced coffees at a Darwin beachside cafe yesterday,” a man took to Reddit to vent his horror after dining at a beachside cafe in Darwin.

Let’s break it down here.

The cost of two bacon and egg rolls with avocado cost an insane $44, while the two iced coffees cost $20 plus $6 extra for ice cream.

The final blow

Hang on- a quick mental calculation makes that bill only $70.

Where did that extra $7 come from?

The customer was slogged a $7 Sunday surcharge to add a bit more sting.

The internet weighs in

The post has amassed over 300 comments, with many weighing into the overpriced bill.

One commenter wrote, “That’s why I don’t go out anymore.”

“You got ripped off big time,” added another.

One commenter argued, “Charging an extra $3 for ice cream that should already be included in a $10 iced coffee.”

While another grumbled, “And the audacity to add a Sunday surcharge”.

However, one questioned (and I totally agree), “Don’t people check the prices before they order?”

An expensive mistake

The original poster replied to this question, pointing blame to no one but himself, “Sadly, I have no excuse. I was with someone who suggested the brekky rolls, then I went straight to the counter and ordered without viewing a menu.

“I’ve learnt my lesson about tapping without paying attention and walking away,” he added.

Customer or cafe?

Businesses are not exempt from rising prices for food and produce and unfortunately have to add these on to the customer, but it feels un-Australian to pay $77 for two rolls and two iced coffees.

I reached out to the Kidspot community and asked if it was the customer's fault for not checking prices before ordering or if the cafe was just taking people for a ride.

And fortunately for small businesses, they were on the cafe’s side.

“I mean, why are you ordering stuff without checking the price first? Is that something people do in the city?” said one regional reader.

“I think it is the customer's fault,” added another.

“If you are spending money without thinking, then you better have 5 million dollars in your bank or something”

“I agree,” shared another.

“Also you have to be careful with how much the extras are. They can really sting you for things like added avo and added ice cream (times two in this case) if you're just adding it on willy nilly.”

An expert weighs in

An article published by delicious. gave tips on how to enjoy still eating out without suffering bill shock afterwards.

First, they revealed that opting for tap water instead of pricey, bottled options not only saves money but also reduces waste.

Embracing the trend of fancy bread and butter offerings can also elevate your dining experience without breaking the bank.

It's important to carefully check your bill to catch any errors or extra charges and consider exploring restaurant specials, including those at upscale places.

Instead of splurging on restaurant desserts, consider indulging in affordable treats from local gelato shops.

Weekday lunches at upscale eateries offer a chance to enjoy fine dining at lower prices, but watch out for extra fees on Sundays and holidays (just like our friend above!).
