Every day for the past five years, Ivo and Pat have headed down to Brighton beach to share a Kitchener bun from the same bakery. Here’s why.

Great-grandparents Ivo and Pat Webb can’t get enough of the Kitchener bun.
So much so, that they have been going to the same bakery by the beach every single day for the past five years just to enjoy its offering of the iconic South Australian delicacy.
And they sometimes come back for more, two or three times in a day.
Married for 65 years, Ivo, 91, and Pat, 86, met and fell in love in their hometown of Karoonda in the Murray Mallee, before moving to Adelaide, where he worked in banking and she was a nurse.
Ivo said he did not recall anyone in Karoonda selling the iconic jam and cream filled Kitchener bun at the time.

But the Webbs have more than made up for that by doing their fair share of helping keep Brighton Jetty Bakery in business, thanks to their love of its Kitchener bun.
They happily make a round trip from their Happy Valley home just to enjoy one.
“We go down there just to get a Kitchener bun and have a look at the ocean to pass a bit of time,” Ivo said.
He said the “friendly” staff at the bakery make him feel at home and “the buns are so fresh”.
“We’ve tried a few other places but these are the tops down here and I have heard a few other people say that, too.
“They’re so light and there’s heaps of jam and cream in them. We have been known to go home and come back.
“Quite often we’ve been known to be in there three times a day.”
The love of Kitchener buns runs in the family.
The Webbs have three children, two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. “Of course they love them, even the littlest girl Nola,” Ivo said.
Ivo has tried other treats at his favourite bakery, but said “you can’t beat their Kitcheners”.
The staff have become friends with the couple and often “the coffee is there” before Ivo and Pat place their order.
Brighton Jetty Bakery owner David Matkovic said his staff “love to have a chat” with Ivo.
“He has that old-generation sass about him,” Mr Matkovic. “He has breakfast, lunch and tea with us.”
As for the scandal created when Sunday Mail columnist Peter Goers suggested the Kitchener bun should be renamed in SA because of its ties with “British monster” Lord Kitchener, Mr Matkovic said it should be named after one of his best customers.
“I couldn’t think of anyone more deserving than Ivo,” he said.
Asked what he thought about the bun being renamed, Ivo said: “It’s getting to be a bit of a thing”.
He added: “It doesn’t worry me – it’s a bit of a joke”.
He also laughed at the suggestion that the Kitchener become to Ivo bun, adding: “It’s all good publicity for David.”
All that said, Ivo has no intention of stopping the daily pilgrimage to the bakery. “We’ll keep going, I’ve got a few more years yet,” he said.
