New Year’s Eve fireworks have been extinguished across Adelaide, but four regional councils will light up the night sky with a bang.
Murray Bridge, Whyalla, Victor Harbor and Port Lincoln will go ahead with fireworks displays despite COVID-19 concerns.
City leaders said in the interests of safety it was necessary to cancel fireworks, including at Glenelg and Brighton, which usually attract crowds of up to 60,000 people.
Displays at Elder Park and Semaphore have also been axed, as have events at Mount Gambier, Port Pirie and Goolwa. Instead, people are being encouraged to ring in the New Year at restaurants or bars across the state.
At Murray Bridge, fireworks will light up the bridge at 9.45pm. The display forms part of community celebration along the foreshore at Sturt Reserve, with those wishing to attend required to obtain a COVID-Safe ticket. The event will also be fenced and the QR code check-in is compulsory.
Mayor Brenton Lewis said the council decided to go ahead with activities to provide residents with “some normality” after a difficult year.
“We only held our first fireworks display last year and it was a huge success, with thousands of people attending,” he said.
At Victor Harbor, fireworks will light up the sky at the causeway from midnight.
Locals and visitors are encouraged to watch the display from their homes as there will be no accompanying community event.
At Whyalla, fireworks will be set off from the end of the breakwater at 9pm, while the Port Lincoln Chamber of Commerce and Tourism will launch displays at 9.30pm and midnight along the foreshore.
