What shopping centres are open and when in Adelaide’s mad rush before Christmas

Left your Christmas gift-buying to the eleventh hour? Adelaide’s major shopping centres have extended their opening hours – see the list.

‘What does that even mean?’: Shopping centre puts up ‘merry everything’ sign

Christmas shopping is in full festive season swing, although some say the cost-of-living crisis is forcing them to be wiser about their purchases this year.

The Australian Retailers Association (ARA) has estimated that 2023’s spending will slightly outpace last year, increasing by 2.5 per cent and amounting to a total of $4.3 billion.

But this increase reflects the inflated prices of supply chains.

ARA chief executive Paul Zahra said he expected consumers would tighten their budgets in the wake of the cost-of-living crisis.

“This year’s holiday season appears set to usher in the value-driven, bargain-savvy consumer, with shoppers spending less per head but shopping purposefully and thoughtfully, amid the cost-of-living crunch,” he said.

To ease time pressure on shoppers, the state government has announced the CBD and suburban shopping centres will be able to open for three nights of midnight shopping and extend their trading hours.

The increased trading hours will give South Australians the flexibility and convenience to find the perfect gift for their family and friends.

The ARA’s Mr Zahra said: “Consumers expect the convenience and ability to shop when it suits them without the pressure of limited opening hours.”

And there is still plenty of opportunity to buy gifts that are both meaningful and at a bargain value.
