South Australians will be given an extra three nights of midnight shopping ahead of Christmas as the government continues to push for extended trading hours.

The government announced on Sunday that traders in the city and suburbs can open until midnight on November 24, or Black Friday, and December 14, 21 and 22.

Businesses will also continue to have the option to open from 9am on Sundays and on Boxing Day.

Industrial Relations Minister Kyam Maher said the changes had “simplified” Christmas shopping.

“The changes to shop trading legislation have simplified the rules and reduced red tape for traders and shoppers alike,” he said.

“As we head into another busy Christmas trading period, we have now proven that we can balance the needs of shoppers and retailers to increase flexibility and certainty around festive season trading hours.”

The amendments made to the shop trading hours legislation allow traders to choose to open later than 9am on Sundays if they wish, and make their own call on Boxing Day. Workers can also refuse to work.

“Our reforms protect important time off for workers, while also allowing greater flexibility for shoppers,” Mr Maher said.

“One year on, it is clear that these reforms have been a success.”

The government said South Australian retailers were continuing to report increases in trade since a year ago when they introduced 9am openings on Sundays.

Nadia Clancy, member for Elder, said the local community has embraced the earlier opening times on Sundays.

“It’s been great for the supermarket sales which is great for local employment,” she said.

“These rules were designed as a compromise between large and small businesses, and I’m please it’s been done in a way that supports workers.”
