If you’re visiting one of Australia’s premier winemaking regions, what better place to stay than a cosy B&B at a winery? Especially when that winery sits on the famous Seppeltsfield Rd, in the heart of the Barossa.
Driving along the date-palm-lined bitumen past the iconic Seppeltsfield Winery, founded in the early 1850s, it’s clear we’re entering an area steeped in South Australian history. And our little cottage for the weekend, Lucy’s House on the Heritage Wines property, is part of that history.
Built in the same era as Seppeltsfield was founded, the cottage has been lovingly restored by winemaker Steve Hoff and his wife Christine. It sits next to the main house, so our hosts are on hand to help with anything we might need, but they’re certainly not intrusive.
The cottage opens on to a cosy living space, with a comfy leather couch, a TV and DVD player in an antique cabinet, and a small table and chairs for meals.
The kitchen here is small but has everything you’d need, including generous breakfast supplies – bread, bacon, eggs fresh from the Hoff’s chooks, homemade jams, cereals, coffee, tea and juice.
In the next room, a pioneer cast iron bed is extremely comfortable and there are beautiful vineyard views out the little window. Little touches, such as pull-cord ceiling light switches and a wood-panelled ceiling, keep the charm of the cottage’s heritage alive.
The bathroom is a new addition and features all the modern conveniences – a toilet is hidden in its own niche, while the rainshower is luxurious, especially when enjoyed with the homemade olive oil soap provided.
The owners have thought of everything – there’s fresh fruit and flowers, a small sewing kit, and a book of information including a list of their favourite local wineries and restaurants.
There’s no doubt we’re in one of the best locations in the Barossa. The Seppeltsfield Rd address is on the doorstep of some of the best restaurants our state has to offer – Hentley Farm and Fino are just down the road, and Appellation is a three-minute walk away. We’re also right between Tanunda and Nuriootpa, at the centre of dozens and dozens of fabulous wineries.
One we can’t miss is the cellar door on this very property. Sixth-generation winemaker Steve has many great drops (try the full-bodied Rossco’s Shiraz) and some fabulous stories to tell. One of his most fascinating is the history of the cottage we’ve been staying in.
Lucy, the family’s former golden Labrador, used to curl up in the crumbling cottage until about 10 years ago, when the roof blew off in a storm. Steve saw that as an opportunity to finally do up the place, creating a B&B named after his beloved pet. He chuckles as he explains we’re staying in the doghouse.
Well, this is one doghouse I’m more than happy to be in.
