Let’s start with an admission. Caravan parks are not my thing. All that cheek-by-jowl living with multitudes of strangers is not my idea of a relaxing holiday. But to every rule there is an exception.
The Laura Community Caravan Park is mine.
The family had been meandering around the Flinders and decided to stop somewhere on the journey back home just to break things up. Laura was settled upon, mainly because of the Golden North ice cream connection.
On arrival we were immediately taken by the small and neat appearance of the park. It appeared well-maintained and there was not the sense the place was crammed to overflowing.
A cabin had been booked and again the surprise was on the upside. The word impeccable comes to mind. A shaded porch opens into a large living space which had a four-person table and chairs in one section and the couch and TV in another. The couch also doubles as a sofa bed.
There is also a sink and cooking facilities along the side of the wall, but nothing about the area seems cramped.
The main bedroom has an extremely comfortable queen-sized bed and the bathroom and shower facilities are also excellent.
But perhaps the underlying ethos of the park is its most impressive feature. It is genuinely a community park. It is overseen by the Laura Community Development and Tourism Association which clearly wants to show the best side of the town that it can. The profits from the park have been used to upgrade not only the park but also the town more broadly. So the park has helped develop Laura’s north parklands including the playground, barbecue shelter (with another to go in soon), toilets and skate park. Money has also gone towards the information bay at the southern entrance and the welcome signs at the four entrances to town with solar lighting at three of these.
It all adds to the impression that Laura is a well-loved, well-tended town. The kids enjoyed running around in the playground, it was pleasant to saunter down the wide main street for a look around, the North Laura pub did a more than adequate family meal. My only mild complaint was that more was not made of that Golden North connection.
We only stayed one night in Laura but it left me with an emotion I had never previously experienced after staying in a caravan park. I wanted to go back.
