It's always a good time to visit Hawaii, but if you want to avoid the crowds, give December and January a miss. If you're a surf enthusiast, winter is generally considered the best time for the famous north-facing swells that surfers travel from all over the world to experience (even watching the surfers from the shore is a pretty wild time).
Depending on which island you're going to you can sometimes travel between them via boat or helicopter, but the easiest way is via an inter-island flight. The main carriers are Hawaiian Airlines and Southwest.
Single-use plastic bags are banned in Hawaii so it's worth bringing a canvas tote or two if you want to go souvenir shopping.
Learn some Hawaiian words: a hui hou means "until we meet again", mahalo is "thank you" and ono is "delicious". And then, of course, there's aloha, which means many things but is always used to express friendship and welcome.
