Would you like gluten-free fries with that?
At Adelaide’s new fast food joint Kenny’s you’re guaranteed of getting them.
That’s because everything on the menu is free from gluten.
“Unfortunately the fryers used (at other businesses) are used to fry other things that have gluten in them, so there’s always a risk of contamination,” said Kristina Noicos who co-owns Kenny’s with her brother Tom.
Next door to Crazy Horse in Hindley St, Kenny’s offers unprocessed alternatives to traditional fast food guilty pleasures.
“At its core Kenny’s is all about nutrition and health,” Ms Noicos.
“We’re really passionate about quality ingredients.”
Kenny’s is named after Kennebec potatoes, grown by producers in Balhannah, which are used to make the house specialty, fresh-cut hot chips.
As the “fresh-cut” suggests, they are made from scratch on the premises.
Kenny’s is also the only place in the city that does fresh-cut hot chips, which are available in the ‘burbs at Chicken Chef, Port Noarlunga Fish & Chips, and Sotos at Semaphore.
Other items on the menu – which is free from dairy as well as gluten – include meatballs, yiros and falafel and house-made sauces such as gravy, mustard and olive oil mayo.
“We want to show people that you can feel good after eating fast food,” Ms Noicos said. “The obligatory fast food hangover isn’t actually normal but a result of poor ingredient quality.”
Sampling the fresh-cut hot chips, The Advertiser’s Jess Ball, who is gluten intolerant, said they had the right balance of crunch and fluffiness.
“They are definitely in the running to be one of SA’s best hot chips, “ she said.
Leon Bratis, 7, who was tucking into hot chips with his brother Kosta, 10, said they were “the best in the world”.
The price of Kenny’s chips starts at $4.99 a bucket.
