An Adelaide teenager has revealed how she “immediately started crying” when she learned about an extraordinary connection between her boyfriend and late mum.
Engineering student Leah Menzies, 18, never thought her partner Thomas McLeod would meet her mum, Yan Menzies, who died in 2011.
The pair was going through old school photos one night when Thomas looked closely at his old kindergarten class picture.
In a moment “straight out of a movie”, he discovered that Leah’s mum had been a student teacher at Agnes Goode kindergarten in Stepney while he was there.
“He opened the first page … and then he saw my mum,” Leah told The Advertiser.
“He was being really dramatic, he had his hand to his mouth, he was saying ‘oh my god’ so much.
“He pointed to her and I immediately started crying, I was so shocked. I couldn’t believe it.”
The couple met in high school but started dating at the end of last year, with Leah often thinking about how much her mum had missed in her life.
“The reason I was crying was just the thought that my mum was taking care of this kid not knowing that he would be the future boyfriend of the girl she was raising at home,” Leah said.
Adding to the incredible coincidence, Ms Menzies only taught at Agnes Goode for one year – 2008, when Thomas attended.
And it turned out that Thomas’ mum knew Ms Menzies, who also taught English to international students.
“His mum helped out at the kindy a lot, so the fact that she met my mum and remembers my mum is really special,” Leah said.
“She said that she was a lovely lady and very kind.”
Leah shared the extraordinary discovery on TikTok, with the video amassing almost 40 million views.
The 18-year-old joked that the pressure was now on for her and Thomas’ relationship, with more than 76,000 comments on the video.
“We have to get married now,” she replied to one commenter.
