It might be the new bar on the Peel St block, but Alfred’s is all about old school values.
Owner Scott Quick, who has taken over the former Barbushka site, was inspired by his grandfather, Alfred, to open the “local watering hole”.
“Growing up I remember my grandfather’s backyard shed, where he used to make all different kinds of home-brew,’ Scott says.
“He had an indoor bar area and an outdoor area, and everyone in the neighbourhood was always dropping by for a beer. I wanted to recreate that — a space where everyone is welcome.”
The result is a warm and inviting space that’s part Cheers, part front bar, Scott says. Designed by Sans Arc Studio, a big chunk of the mezzanine level has been removed and the bar is now central on the ground floor, “where regulars can pull up a stool for a chat and a pint”. As for the look, think Aussie front bar, with retro glazed tiles and a solid timber bar top, plastered walls and timber panelling.
Manager Matt Holding and his team will be serving up local tap and craft beers, SA wines and classic cocktails “with a seasonal twist”. A small food menu is being finalised.
