Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young has tied the knot this Easter weekend, taking a breather from the election campaign.
On Saturday morning the South Australian politician married her best friend, Ben Oquist, the executive director of Canberra think tank The Australia Institute.
She posted photographs from the joyous occasion on her Instagram page.
“It was the most perfect day, surrounded by our family and friends,” Hanson-Young said.
“The love in the air at @lobethalroad was more beautiful than I could have ever imagined.”
She also expressed her gratitude to Uncle Moogy Sumner for conducting a “very special” traditional Ngarrindjeri ceremony on Friday.
“We feel so lucky and loved.”
The couple celebrated with 80 friends and family at Lobethal Road Wines, while dressed in a white strapless lace gown designed by Alexis George, The Advertiser reported.
“We’ve been friends for a long time and as the pandemic was hitting we kind of fell in love and it just happened. It was this beautiful transition from friendship into something more intimate and I feel like I am marrying my best friend. We just both feel so lucky,” Hanson-Young said.
The gathering was made extra special due to the fact the family had been kept apart due to Covid for so long, and were now finally able to meet.
“Because of Covid, my side of the family, the family who live in Victoria and Ben’s side of the family who live in New South Wales haven’t actually met until now, so it’s a lovely bringing together of the two families,” she said.
Among the attendees were Greens senate candidate Barbra Pocock, member for Sydney Alex Greenwich as well as former Greens leader Bob Brown, from whom Mr Oquist used to work.
