My sister needs to be stopped from naming her son something atrocious

"Pregnancy hormones can be genuinely nuts enough to make someone think that is a beautiful name."

Mum's surprising place to find a baby name will shock you

"My sister is currently seven months pregnant and will be having a baby boy," a woman began her post in the r/namenerds forum.

While it might be normal to look to one's own life and interests for naming inspiration, this woman thinks her sister has gone too far.

"For her whole life, my sister has loved sea and aquatic/marine life. All of it just makes her happy," she explains.

Can you see where this is going? Something seems fishy...

The fishy baby name

"At the beginning of her pregnancy, she didn’t have a name picked out. We live in different states, so we don’t communicate as much. A few weeks ago, I called her and asked if she had a name picked out," the OP wrote.

"She said she settled on the name 'Seabass', yes, the fish (I am not making this up, I truly wish I was). She’s always been playful, so I thought she was joking, but she said she really loved it."

Yesterday, she went to visit her sister to help her with the nursery, and she noticed a custom name sign that said 'Seabass' and a blanket with his name on it.

"I told her that I really didn’t think this was a good choice, tried to give her other nature or 'ocean' names, and even asked if she could use the name Sebastian," the woman recalled.

"But she wasn’t having it and said, 'This name feels right for him.' I know he’s not my child, so I’m trying to respect her choice. But am I overreacting here? Or is my sister just wild for this?"

"Pregnancy hormones can be genuinely nuts"

People immediately ran to the comments to check that the post wasn't a joke.

"Is this a fake post?" the top comment, with over 2000 likes, asked.

"I was so hesitant to post this because I didn’t want people to think I’m joking, but no, I am being serious," the woman replied.

"Oh God, I was really hoping it was just a joke," someone else said.

Once that was cleared up, people wasted no time sharing their opinions on the name.

"People like your sister are so irritating," said one. "Remind her that her son will be an actual person, not just a fun accessory for her to tote around. She is treating him like a toy poodle.

"He will be introducing himself to kids in school, at job interviews, etc., with the name Seabass, for God's sake. As a fun family nickname, that’s fine, but he needs a real name with which he can go through life."

"Okay, maybe, just maybe, she could get away with it for a middle name - but a first name?! Hell no," wrote someone else.

"The name Seabass is atrocious," a different user declared.

A few others shared that they knew people named Sebastian who went by 'Sebas' for short, so that could be another option for her sister.
