‘If you have to explain, it’s a bad name’: Glee couple gives baby weirdest name

The internet hates it, we hate it and it makes us wonder, don’t these people have anything better to do than torture their kids?

Baby names, what a minefield topic.

Parents seem to fall into a handful of camps.

There are the staunch classicists who uphold traditional names and spellings, plus the subgroup: those who choose classic names from different languages. I’m from this camp.

Then there are the controversy-courters, and there’s nothing wrong with this group, it’s just that their baby name choices can be divisive.

Maybe they don’t care to spell a traditional name in a traditional way (I’m looking at you Loegyn); maybe they want their child to be the only person in the world with their name, like X Æ A-12 Musk.  

And while there are plenty of regular people who choose different names for their kids, a disproportionate number seem to be famous.

It makes me wonder, is being mega-rich just really boring? I could do with some boring.

Glee star Darren Criss reveals baby name

Glee alum Darren Criss, AKA Blaine Anderson, just welcomed his second child with wife Mia Swier into the world, and three days after announcing the little boy’s name on social media, the trolling continues.

Obviously we can’t expect “John” or “Michael” from someone who named their now two-year-old daughter Bluesy Belle, but we didn’t expect a name that was so on-the-nose.

The latest addition to the Criss-Swier clan is called Brother László Criss.

Note how the B in Brother is capitalised, which would suggest that it’s intended to be a proper noun… in other words, the name of something. In this case, the name of a baby.

Darren confirmed it.

“M&D just delivered their follow-up single. Brother László Criss, 6/3/24. Out now… and yes his first name is Brother.”

Fans confused by Darren Criss’ baby name

The opinion among followers was unanimous. A name that needs to be explained is a bad idea.

“If you have to clarify that it’s his name maybe it shouldn’t be his name,” said one person.

“I feel so bad for this child. I would change it as soon as I could,” said another.

“What the hell is up with celebs choosing such ridiculous names,” said a third person, which is what we said!

Not everyone hated the name, or if they did, they chose to focus on the baby news instead.

“Yesssss! So happy for your growing family!! Love you all!” wrote actor Matthew Morrison, who played Spanish teacher Will Schuester on the show.

It’s going to be tough to live down a name like Brother, but at least the little guy has a solid middle name. László, a very cool Hungarian name, falls squarely in the classic names from different languages camp.
