‘My 1yo just finished bath time when I realised his baby monitor was hacked’

“Someone was literally just looking around in my baby’s room with a camera,” says terrified Gold Coast mum, Eden.

Eden had just finished giving her son a shower when she prepared him for bed.

Sitting in the living room after putting him to bed, the Gold Coast woman sat down and started doing work on her laptop.

Her one-year-old usually sleeps soundly through the night, but she keeps a baby monitor in his room just in case.

Aussie mum horrified after someone hacks into baby monitor

“I looked at the monitor and it was panning the room”

“All of a sudden, I heard this noise, and I was like, ‘Is he awake in the room?’” she asked in a TikTok

Curious by the sound, she walked into the room and grabbed the monitor, taking it back to the living room to watch her son and examine the device.

He was still fast asleep, so she put the monitor next to her on the couch and continued working.

Then something unusual happened.

“I literally looked at the monitor and it was moving, panning the room,” she said, moving her hands from side to side.

She picked up her phone and recorded the creepy moment, which she later uploaded in a separate clip, initially thinking there was an issue with the camera.

“But no, someone hacked into my baby monitor and was looking around the room,” the terrified mum continued.

“And the scariest part about this is we literally just did shower time and got him dressed in his room and stuff, and the monitor was on at that point as well.”

Non-WiFi baby monitors are still vulnerable to hacks

After issuing the urgent warning to other parents, Eden confirmed she would be “chucking [the baby monitor] out because I’m not ever putting that on again.”

“That was so scary,” she said. “Someone was literally just looking around in my baby’s room with a camera.”

Worryingly, Eden isn’t the only person who learned their baby monitor was hacked.

Baby monitors, especially those connected via WiFi, are relatively easy for hacks to compromise. However, Eden confirmed her baby monitor didn’t rely on WiFi, making the incident even more terrifying.

Despite not being connected to the internet, non-WiFi monitors communicate using frequencies at short and medium distances, as Hello Baby explained. This means they are just as vulnerable to a hack if the attacker is close by and knows the correct frequency.

We’ve seen plenty of horror stories of parents waking to the sound of strangers in their kids’ rooms, now Eden wants to make sure it doesn’t happen to others.

“A reminder to keep an eye on your baby monitor, and even just turn it off during the day and when you’re doing things in the room or whatever,” she said.

“New fear unlocked, thanks!”

The video has amassed three million views, leaving parents understandably petrified.

“That is so scary,” a worried person wrote. “That’s terrifying, I’m so so sorry,” a woman added.

“New fear unlocked, thanks.”

It was a familiar story for plenty of others. “Mine got hacked too!” read a comment. “A man was talking to my daughter. So scary.”

“I always feel like somebody is watching me when the camera is on but I thought I was just being paranoid,” said another.

“This is why I always turn it away or turn it off during the day and only use it when I’m not in the room,” a third wrote. “But we cosleep, so I never need it at night.”

“Unfortunately, this has happened before,” a mum recalled. “I threw my monitor away. I was traumatised.”

“This is why I got an audio-only monitor,” another parent added. “The video ones scare me too much.”
