The two most popular baby names in the state this year prove South Australians like to stick to tried and true favourites.
For the 11th year in a row, the name Oliver has topped the list, with 147 babies given the name this year.
Isla is still the most popular girl’s name and has been for the past three years.
This year 102 girls were registered with the name Isla.
Charlotte, Olivia and Ava continue to be popular choices and have been among the top 10 baby names for girls for the last few yeas.
Noah, Leo and Henry are enduring favourites for boys names.
Queenstown local Kiara Smith said she was surprised at the popularity of Henry after naming him last December.
“When I was pregnant, my husband and I didn’t find out the sex of the baby, we just had a list of names and we had it down to two names for boys – Harry and Henry.
“At the time he was born, there was a little boy next door, who was born a couple minutes before, and they named him Harry.
“So that’s how we went with Henry.
“We actually didn’t think it would be that popular, which is ironic, because that’s why we picked it.
“We haven’t come across anyone called Henry in childcare or anything, there’s no others.
“The only Harrys we know are older, like 11 or 12 years old.”
This year, 88 Charlottes were born in South Australia.
First-time mum Celeste welcomed baby Charlotte into the world in May.
“I guess we just love the name and how traditional it is, it doesn’t go out of date or anything like that.
“We both like Charlie and Lottie as nick names.
“There’s a little Charlotte in the royal family.
“I think it’s common but classic.”
Consumer and Business Affairs Minister Andrea Michaels revealed the list.
“Classic names rarely go out of style and this year, we’ve seen traditional names like
Isla, Oliver, Charlotte, Ava and Henry remain popular among South Australian
parents,” she said.
“My own son is a Charlie so it’s nice to see it remains in the top 10.
“I look forward to seeing if Isla and Oliver can once again reign supreme in 2024 for
the fourth year or if there’s a dark horse that might knock them off top spot.”
