Not only has baby Poppy been voted South Australia’s cutest Spring baby, she has also delivered a masterclass in how to perfect your first photo with Santa.
Although the man with the white beard is meant to spread joy, Saint Nick has been the cause of a fair few tantrums over the years with bubs feeling less festive and more frightened.
While the photographic results of a screaming baby with Santa can be humorous, Poppy’s mum Hannah Potts will be on the nice list this year after providing other parents with her top tips on how to survive your baby’s first Father Christmas photo.
“We just made sure that we gave her the best start to the morning with a good sleep and feed before she left,” Ms Potts said.
“We also got there quite early, just to make sure … we could try and settle her a little bit (as we were not) too sure how she’d go with sitting on a strange person’s lap.
“She was good in the car so we were hopeful she would be okay with no meltdowns.”
Poppy nailed the brief with her parents recalling how she was too “mesmerised” by the lights and colours to be bothered by Santa.
Another key part of the perfect photo is, of course, the outfit.
“We made sure we dressed her when we got there, rather than in the car, just in case there were any accidents,” Ms Potts said.
Many families across South Australia will be celebrating their baby’s first Christmas this year.
Ms Potts and her husband, Simon, will be doing just that as first-time parents.
“Our sweet little Poppy has the most mesmerising big eyes and cheeky smile,” Ms Potts said.
“(She) loves giraffes and bath time.”
“It’s very special. (Having Poppy) is even more of a reason to lean into the Christmas decorations and the tree and all the first baby things.
“My sister had a baby 10 weeks before I had Poppy so we will have two little babies at Christmas this year …(and) they are the first grandchildren for my parents.”
While the Klemzig family feel “blessed with a very happy baby”, Mr Potts nearly missed his daughter’s birth after he fainted in the operating theatre while watching his wife have her C-section.
“With the amazing help and support of our obstetrician and delivery team, he was able to get back up and watch her be born,” Ms Potts said.
Meet Archer - another adorable Spring bub!
Archer only joined the Hatswell family seven weeks ago but has already completed their team of four.
Not only is this adorable boy bringing joy to his mum and dad, his older-brother Noah is also smitten. And can you blame them? Look at that face!
“It’s really good,” mum Jamie Hatswell said.
“I just think (the boys will) be the best of friends.”
As this was her second pregnancy, the Salisbury North mum said she felt “pretty good” this time around and carried her baby to full term.
During her scheduled C-section, Mrs Hatswell’s spinal block failed to work, leading to her having to make a tough decision in a matter of minutes.
“I could still feel everything, I could still lift my legs … I was literally lying there ready to go,” she said.
“(The anaesthetist) said ‘you can either come back tomorrow or we can put you under now’, so it was very much on the spot.
“That was quite emotional I think I cried pretty much straight away.
“I obviously wanted to be there (and) be awake and experience him coming out of me and holding him.”
While the birth did not go to plan, Mrs Hatswell was finally able to meet Archer a few hours later after leaving the recovery room.
“I was so excited, all I wanted to do was give him a snuggle,” the 27-year-old said.
“Chilled” Archer is already settling in to family life and quickly won over two-and-a-half-year-old Noah with a special present.
“Noah is obsessed with anything, diggers or trucks and whatnot so we got him blue digger … and said it was from Archer,” Mrs Hatswell said.
“That’s been his favourite toy everyday since and he gave Archer a cuddle and held him, and he’s been really, really good.
“I’m really looking forward to Christmas morning, we’ve all got matching pyjamas.”
