Iconic Adelaide nightclub The Planet’s ‘Greed’ coming back for one night only

Remember this? Lines down the street, celebrity sightings and the best dance floor in town – this club changed the face of Adelaide‘s nightlife. Now it’s back, for one night only.

Downtown Nightclub

It’s the now-defunct Adelaide nightclub that sat abandoned for more than a decade and sparked a multimillion-dollar legal battle.

But for a generation of Adelaideans, The Planet was the place to party.

Its original Pirie St site played home to iconic 80s night ‘Greed’, which changed the face of Adelaide’s Friday night-life in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Names such as tennis star Lleyton Hewitt, flamboyant former Sydney Swans player Warwick Capper and a plethora of soapie stars of the time would get their groove on at the venue.

DJ Sean Craig Murphy, one of Greed’s original organisers, even recalls that former TV personality and senator Derryn Hinch would attend on Friday nights and bring bottles of his favourite red wine.

“I loved it when it got so big that we had a line down Pirie St past The Office Bar. The Office Bar would have radio ads saying, ‘If you’re sick of waiting in line to get into The Planet, pop into The Office’,” Murphy said.

“At our peak we were getting 5000 customers a night, but the venue only held 2000 at a time, so we were turning it over almost three times a night.”

Its epicurean “10 per cent music, 20 per cent alcohol and 70 per cent sex” tagline, cheap drinks, wild events and famous DJs were infamous during the height of its popularity.

“There was one night we installed a massive portable spa on the dance floor for our ‘Spa Wars’ night,” Murphy said.

But in 2004, the music stopped at The Planet.

While the now-demolished dancefloor is just a memory, Murphy is bringing back Greed for one night only in a reunion two years in the making.

“We obviously haven’t been able to do a reunion for a while because of Covid, but our past five have been sold-out nights so we are really pumped to do it all again,” Murphy said.

Murphy will be joined by Jason “Snowy” Carter and Alexander Stainthorpe at the Greed reunion at The Arkaba next Sunday.
