With the pandemic up-ending our ability to splurge on overseas holidays, many people have redirected their discretionary budgets to self care, but how much are they actually spending on beauty treatments?
Latest national economic statistics reveal that we didn’t hold back – some women are spending up to $1900 a month.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics found spending in the personal services industry, including hairdressing and beauty salons, grew by 15.4 per cent – the fastest quarterly growth ever for that industry.
With a wide range of services available and the beauty industry booming, we asked five Adelaide women what they spent on self-care each month.
ANDREA ARANIBAR
Restaurant manager, The Alchemists Kitchen
Age: 32
Estimated beauty monthly spend: $1120 – $1970
Andrea Aranibar used to travel overseas at least five times a year. After Covid saw borders closed, she decided to redirect her income to a different form of self care – beauty and skin treatments.
With her excess time and money, Ms Aranibar decided to tackle a skin condition that she had been battling – rosacea with the help of the Advertiser’s winner of SA’s Best Skin Specialist, Sabrina Watts from SKIN Aesthetics Clinique.
After an initial $200 skin consultation, Ms Watts put Ms Aranibar on the road to recovery.
Now Ms Aranibar indulges in a cocktail of skin treatments from $170 detox facials to $500 radio frequency skin needling, all in the name of a flawless complexion.
“(Self care) is extremely important,” Ms Aranibar said, “I feel like you’re more confident.”
A staple in Ms Aranibar’s self care routine is her eyelash extensions which she religiously gets done once every two weeks, at $75 each time.
“I will never get rid of them,” she said.
As a former Jetstar ground crew member, Ms Aranibar said that having her eyelashes made getting ready for her red-eye shifts bearable.
“I would just put on my foundations and that’s it, all done.”
Working in the bustling hospitality industry can leave your hair fried from the constant high ponytails to the heat in the kitchen, so to prevent damage Ms Aranibar stops at her hairdresser once a week for a $55-$65 blow-dry.
“I feel good when my hair is clean,” she said.
