Entertainer Silvie Paladino has one wish for the year ahead: to travel to Europe with her family.
“It’s been too long,” the Melbourne-based singer and stage performer says.
“And spend time at our beach house on the Mornington Peninsula, going out for dinner to really nice restaurants and spending time with family and friends.”
Granting wishes is what Silvie is best known for this year as she plays Marie, the Fairy Godmother in Rodgers and Hammerstein’s musical Cinderella. The musical recently finished its Melbourne and Brisbane seasons, and opens in Sydney next month.
“I’ve been in the music and entertainment industry for 35 years and I wouldn’t do anything else,” she says. “I love playing the Fairy Godmother.”
Later this year, Silvie will again perform in Carols by Candlelight, one of the many highlight events of her career.
“I have so many: singing the national anthem at the AFL grand final in 2005; touring with Michael Bolton; singing for Roger Federer; my annual gig performing at Carols by Candlelight at the Myer Music Bowl in Melbourne; and all the musicals (Les Miserables, Cats, Miss Saigon, Mamma Mia!) I’ve starred in over all these years.”
Cinderella opens in Sydney on October 23 at the Sydney Lyric.
Who Silvie Paladino Where We have recently moved into this home in Keilor. It’s a two-year-old townhouse. I live with my husband Greg of 23 years, my son Christian, 22, my daughter Isabella, 19, and our dogs Max and Sparkles. Favourite thing My favourite part of this home is the sunken kitchen/lounge/living area because the large windows and doors look out on to our pool and alfresco area. Inspiration Our home has a very modern and Scandinavian style. Home means comfort, family, love and peace to me.
I feel very blessed to live here with my loved ones.
MY FAVOURITE THINGS
MY FIRST SINGLE, SKIN ON SKIN
I recorded my first single, Skin on Skin, in 1987. I left school to become a professional singer and this is one of the first things I did.
OUR SWIMMING POOL
We love our pool! It is heated so we can use it all year round. We also have a spa which is particularly fabulous in the winter.
GEORGE JENSEN VASE
George Jensen is the finest in Scandinavian design offering home items in sterling silver. I love the simple sleep design of this vase.
MY GRAND PIANO
I’ve always dreamed of having a black grand piano, so my family surprised me for my 40th birthday and made my dream come true.
VICTOR HUGO PRINT
This was a gift from Sir Cameron Mackintosh when I was in London performing Fantine in Les Miserables. It’s from 1879 in Vanity Fair.
LARK WHISKY
As a singer I find alcohol isn’t great for my voice but I like to reward myself at the end of a week with a Lark whisky on ice. I find it quite soothing for my voice. Lark is an award-winning whisky from Tasmania.
CROSS TILE
This is from Dartagnan in Moonee Ponds. I’m a Christian and my faith is very important to me. I have a selection of these porcelain tiles but this one is my favourite. Each tile has a description. This one says ‘Medieval cross- Radiant cross, casting divine light upon four corners of the world’.
PRINTS OF THE FAMILY DOGS
My dogs are my fur babies and they are the best thing for our family. My daughter had a brilliant idea to get these prints made up of them for my Christmas present last year.
I cried when I opened them.
