'God-tier' Aussie dessert divides internet: What's the best way to serve it?

While some argued, "mixing it up into an ice cream soup" was the best approach, others said layers of "ice cream, Milo, ice cream, Milo" was the way to go. What do you do?

Boozy Baileys Milo Thickshakes

A heated debate has emerged online over the best way to serve a classic Aussie dessert - Milo and ice cream.

The culinary controversy was kicked off after a man took to the r/Australia thread to express his admiration for the iconic combo.

For him, ice cream sprinkled with the chocolate malt powder is 'gold-tier' - and something he even claims is "better than pav." 😲

He likes to serve it by "suffocating" the ice cream in Milo, but commenters were quick to give their own serving suggestions.

The god-tier Aussie Dessert

User DamienMcC27 wrote: "I'm a grown man and I love this malt stuff, have my whole life."

He then argued that if you don't like Milo you're "un-Australian" and should be "banished to exile."

"PS: Vanilla ice cream suffocating on Milo is a god-tier dessert. Better than a pav," he concluded.

And in his follow-up post, he shared a photo of his heavy-handed approach, where you can hardly even see the ice cream underneath the pile of Milo on top.

"Mix it together and make a chocolate soup"

The photo now has 4.1k likes and nearly 500 comments. And while nearly everyone agreed on the fundamental components - Milo and ice cream, it's the details that ignited debate.

One faction argued that the Milo and ice cream pairing lies in the continuous top-ups. "Eat the top layer of Milo and ice cream and then add another round of Milo. Repeat," one user advised.

Someone else said: "Make it like a lasagne from the start: Ice cream, Milo, ice cream, Milo. That way you get chocolate in every bite." Someone replied, "Like a Tiramilo."

"You always need a 50:50 ratio of Milo:ice cream - that's how you make sure it's chocolatey enough," a different man commented.

Adjacent to this school of thought were those who advocated for more of a "chocolate soup" approach. While they agreed that Milo should be present in every bite - they claimed that mixing it through the ice cream was the best way to achieve that.

"I had a very specific and scientific process from the age of about four. Sprinkle on the Milo, then cut it up with the back of your spoon and then start smooshing it. Add more Milo and keep mixing. It was like the best chocolate thick shake you could imagine," wrote one member.

Someone else added: "As a kid, we'd mix it up and call it 'ice cream soup'. Tasted amazing." A different person added: "Melting it in the microwave for a tiny bit made the slurry 100x better."

"Add a shot of Kahlua"

For the third fraction of people, the debate was all about the add-ons and toppings.

"It always needs ice magic on top," one person said. Another advocated for "adding a shot of Kahlua."

"Tim Tams and Violet Crumbles smashed on top is so good," claimed one woman.

And the final camp of people suggested completely new desserts altogether. "Fill a cup with Milo, add a dash of milk and stir until it becomes a paste. Then put it in the freezer for an hour. THE BEST," wrote one person.

"Milo mug cake. Enough said," stated another.

And some commenters just soaked up the nostalgia.

"What in the eight-year-old, skinned knees, sunburnt, out on my bicycle until the street lights come on kind of nostalgic flashback do you call this?" one person wrote.

Another said: "Remember if you breathed through your mouth you would literally choke to death on the stuff?"

Then this lost person said: "This post popped into my home page as recommended out of nowhere. I am not Australian, so I am really confused. This looks nice, but I have zero clue what it is. Can someone explain?"

Ahh, young, uninitiated one... you have not lived until now.
