A menu of solely South Australian seafood is a rare catch – it’s no wonder locals and tourists like are hooked on Port Lincoln’s Fish Cafe.
Owner Craig McCathie and his wife Sandy Harder expanded their fish processing plant and wholesaler, The Fresh Fish Place, around seven years ago to cater for people wanting to eat-in.
Their 60-seat diner and new alfresco deck serves local specialties such as jumbo king george whiting caught in southern Spencer Gulf waters, salt and pepper calamari “with tentacles, wings and chips” and Coffin Bay oysters.
“The fish is unloaded here by the fishermen, then it goes onto the table and gets filleted,” said ex-fisherman Mr McCathie. “The only thing that touches it is a sharp knife and water. Then it goes out to the cafe or the fish shop for someone to take home to cook.”
The cafe-in-a-fish-processor is just one example of SA’s regional restaurants with a difference, showcased in the upcoming delicious.SA Regional 50. Others include Casa Carboni, the tiny eatery in a Barossa cooking school that, depending on the day, might only have a pasta and a dessert – but it’s some of the best Italian food going around. Near Millicent in the state’s south east, you can taste Wagyu beef at Mayura Station’s cattle property, or opt for kangaroo, camel or emu at Parachilna’s Prairie Hotel.
There’s never been a better or more important time to travel South Australia, so our delicious.SA food experts have hit the road to discover the very best dining you can experience along the way.
