Sydney man’s hiccups in adventure to eat a sausage at every Bunnings store

A Sydney man’s bid to eat a sausage at every Bunnings in the country has hit a few snags along the way of his epic Aussie adventure.

Despite being robbed in the outback and driving 36 hours to a store only to find it shut, a Sydney man reckons he will meet his mission to eat a sausage at every Bunnings in the country.

Josh Eastwell, 25, embarked on his curious adventure in January last year and is 108 snags away from meeting his challenge by the year’s end.

It’s a journey that hasn’t been without a hitch: Being robbed at Halls Creek in Western Australia’s East Kimberley Region was “probably the worst hiccup so far”.

“There’s signs everywhere to not leave your stuff out and, yeah, we left our stuff out and lost a swag and some other stuff out the back of the ute, out in the middle of bloody nowhere,” Mr Eastwell recalled.

Visiting a far-flung sizzle in Esperance also turned out to be a setback that will require another trip.

“We just drove 36 hours to get there and there were no snags. And the next snag wasn’t for another five hours down the road at Albany,” he moaned.

“It was absolutely devastating.”

The self-confessed workaholic figured the adventure was a great way to see this Great Southern Land on some epic weekend trips.

“I was stuck at work and needed a reason to get out and about,” he said.

“I work in logistics, so I’m pretty logistically minded.

“Basically, I just plan out my route and just punch it out over the weekend.”

So far Mr Eastwell has downed 172 of the 280 Bunnings snags on offer, with his younger brother Ace, 19, usually by his side videoing his exploits.

“Tasmania was just a fly out, hire a car, whack out the snags and then fly back,” he explained.

“South Australia – I was living in Victoria at the time – so it was just a drive across the border.

“Same goes with Victoria, it was all in a weekend. ACT was just a weekend trip.

“WA though, I took three weeks annual leave because it’s a bit far. I should’ve just flew in all honesty.”

Despite the volume of sausages he has gobbled to date, Mr Eastwell is surprisingly not sick of them yet.

“I used to just have them quite literally just a sausage in bread, so plain, but for the aesthetic of the video, I learnt to like onions and sauce,” he said.

“Every now and then you’ll come across a sizzle that’s doing something different and you straight up go for the alternative.

“In Seaford, South Australia, the sausages they had were pork, chicken, beef with all these different wholemeal, full-grain breads.

“So straight away, just break up all the beef snags with a porkie because otherwise it’s way too repetitive.”

Things got a bit much in Victoria when he downed 25 in a day and broke out in mouth ulcers.

“I was a little bit sick of them that day, but overall I am not over it yet,” he said.

Mr Eastwell doesn’t know if he’ll feel the same way by the year’s end: “I’ll definitely be a lot more overweight though.”

One thing’s for sure – he won’t ever give up the sausage.

“They go down a treat,” he quipped.

“It’s almost like a nostalgia really — you know when you’re a little young fella and your old man goes, ‘Jump in the car, we’re going to Bunnings’, and you’re lucky enough to get a snag?

“There’s something there that makes it so unique and so special.”
