An Aussie mum has left fellow parents in shock over her “incredible” illusion cake.
In a Facebook post that has clocked almost 2000 ‘likes’, the mum revealed that she used three Woolies mud cakes, at $4.50 each, to make the Moana inspired dessert for her daughter’s fourth birthday.
She shared snaps of her spectacular creation to the popular Facebook group – Woolies/Coles Mudcake hacks – which immediately racked up hundreds of comments.
“This is one of the best I’ve seen,” one person commented.
“You are way way talented!!! Seeing these amazes me. Love your work,” another wrote, while a third added: “Wow!! This looks amazing! Well done.”
Many were shocked to learn the mum used jelly to help create the blue ocean illusion.
“Oh my gosh …. It’s jelly! That is so so so clever! I’m so saving this! How awesome!” one Facebook user wrote.
The “island cake” also featured two chocolate mountains, chocolate seashells and a Moana figurine on top.
“We didn’t line it and used a non spring loaded tin,” the mum said after many asked how she lined the tin.
“It did leak a little but we used duck tape on the join then sat it in cling wrap up the edges with some tension behind it and strapped the cling wrap around the tin also.”
And while you would be forgiven to think it would be difficult to make, the mum said “it’s easier than it looks”.
She added that she got great guidance from watching a YouTube tutorial titled ‘How to make an island cake’ by ‘Emmy Made’.
In the clip, the YouTuber stacks the three circular cakes on top of each other with ganache in between.
In the mum’s case, she used three Woolies mudcakes, totalling $13.50.
After the mudcakes have set with the ganache acting as the ‘glue’, the YouTuber then carves it to form the basis of the mountain shapes and underwater portion of the cake.
She then makes the mountain peaks using the excess cake and ganache.
For the ocean illusion, she mixes 120g of gelatine, a cup and a half of water, 150g sugar and two tablespoons of lemon juice. She also adds four ‘toothpick dips’ of teal food colouring for the “tropical water”.
After it has cooled down, she pops the cake inside a pan, lines it with baking acetate and pours the jelly over the cake. It is then refrigerated, left over night to set.
The Aussie mum said the tutorial was very helpful and has since inspired others with her clever version of the hack.
“This looks so good!!!!! My daughter loves Moana! Think I will be doing something like this,” one mum wrote.
