TikTok video shows off mum’s easy $20 Woolworths wedding cake hack

It might seem counterintuitive to turn a cake upside down, but its how one woman turned a budget item into a wedding-worthy dessert.

Mum makes wedding cake out of Woolies mud cake

When it comes to weddings, the cake can be one of the most pricey parts.

So that’s what makes this mum’s solution using three cakes from Woolies very appealing – especially given it costs just $20.

In a video on TikTok @messynessy89, real name Vanessa Strong, revealed how she used the $4.80 cakes and icing to create a layered ombre cake.

She placed two of the cakes upside down to ensure she had a flat surface for the next layer, while also keeping the delicious icing – a win-win in my opinion.

To make the cake, Vanessa first placed a chocolate mud cake upside down on a serving tray, before piping a layer of buttercream on top.

Next she added a caramel Woolies cake – again upside down – and another layer of buttercream.

For the final layer she put a chocolate mud cake the right side up but with the icing scraped off the top (perfect halftime snack, TBH).

Vanessa then added a layer of buttercream icing to the top and used a spatula to spread the icing evenly around.

Then she piped layers of dark pink, light pink and cream on each layer of the cake, spreading it evenly to create an ombre look.

For the finishing touch Vanessa added artificial flowers to the top and voila, a wedding cake for $20.

The video has since been viewed more than 100,000 times, with plenty of commenters keen to try it out the next time they needed a “cost-effective” celebration cake.

“This is awesome! I’m going to use it for my daughter’s 21st,” one mum wrote.

Others couldn’t believe how easy it was to make a cake fit for a wedding using the supermarket cakes, with one person joking: “Is this how cake decorators get rich?”

“I thought about this before and wondered why people didn’t do this,” another commented. “Thank you for this. If it ain’t broke, just fix it a little bit.”

It’s not the only Woolies cake hack Vanessa has shared on TikTok that’s been a hit.

Last month she shared how you could also create a seriously luxe chocolate drizzle cake using the supermarket cakes.

All you had to do was cut the icing off two of the mud cakes, layer one on top of the other and cover in buttercream icing.

Then Vanessa drizzled melted chocolate over the top, adding some strawberries for a finishing garnish.
