Iconic Coles cookie is now available in Gluten Free

A cult Australian cookie is now available to even more customers.

Coles has released their Ultimate Chocolate Chip Cookies in a gluten-free version, making the popular product accessible to those with food intolerances.

The new gluten-free cookie comes in the triple chocolate chip, chocolate chip and chocolate chip dipped flavours.

The chocolate chip comes in two sizes – 40g which retails for $2.50 – and the 252g which is $6.

The other two are just in the 252g size.

Customers are thrilled with the inclusion to the range after being tipped off by TikTok account @deficitincalories.

“Hell yes,” one person said.

Another said: Going to buy some ASAP.”

A Coles spokesperson told news.com.au: “We’re excited to bring the Coles Ultimate Gluten Free Cookie range, which is the top selling Coles cookie, in a gluten-free version so our customers with dietary requirements can also enjoy the delicious and decadent chocolate flavours.

“We developed the range to taste as close to the original Coles Ultimate Chocolate Chip cookies as possible, using ingredients and gluten-free flour.

“The new gluten-free range has the signature ‘Ultimate cookie’ ingredients; 40% chocolate chips and desiccated coconut, and all made in Australia.

“The range is made by Melbourne company, Not A Trace, which produces delicious gluten, wheat and nut-free “Coles I’m Free From” treats like Chocolate Mint Crèmes biscuits, Scotch Fingers and Choc Chip cookies.”

The original versions of the cookies made a splash online earlier this year when a New Zealand man revealed he always buys boxes when he visits Australia.

The man – who goes by the username @natnmj on TikTok – shared a video that showed him clearing the shelves of Coles Ultimate Chocolate Chip Cookies, titled: “POV: You’re going back to New Zealand.”

During the short video, the man can be seen loading up a trolley with boxes of the item at a Melbourne store, prompting many Aussies to ask: “Why?”

Thankfully, the Kiwis let us in on the secret, revealing the simple reason for bulk buying the biscuits.

“NZ don’t have Coles cookies or Coles and some people in NZ crave for these. So if someone goes to Australia they would always ask to bring some back,” one explained.

The gluten free inclusion comes after Coles announced in January a 75 per cent sales spike for it’s ‘I’m Free From’ range since 2020.

The products, which include chocolate mint crèmes biscuits, scotch fingers and choc chip cookies, start at $3.50 a pack are and available in a range of gluten-free, nut-free and wheat-free varieties.

Coles general manager for grocery Leanne White said earlier this year: “At Coles, we’ve seen an increasing demand for gluten-free crackers, bread and biscuits in the past few years, coupled by customers adopting gluten-free products as a source of healthy food and a rise in consumption by growing awareness of food allergies and intolerance.”

Coles gave a $400,000 grant to Not A Trace to develop more of these products.
