BUTTER
Cuisine: American fried chicken with Asian influences
It’d be a tough task to peg Butter’s allure. It could be the quirky display of collectable sneakers in the front window and for sale inside, or possibly the old skool hip hop music playing throughout the day.
There’s also no denying the cult following they’ve forged with a menu featuring fried chicken and ramen, or their Saturday and Sunday bottomless brunch.
Most likely though, it’s the “do what you love” ethos behind it all and for co-owner Julian Cincotta, that includes paying it forward.
“During this once in a lifetime pandemic, restaurants need to adapt to survive. At Butter, we are introducing a range of initiatives to both keep as many staff as possible employed and also to best help and service our communities in this time of crisis,” he says.
“We are all in this together, that’s why we don’t like to refer to it as social distancing but instead physical distancing, social unity.”
With this in mind, Julian and the team have created a way to Butter-it-Forward: buy a $20 voucher and they will match your contribution and provide two $20 meal to a person in need.
Not like you need an excuse, but it’s a great one to justify that extra order of wings and cinnamon doughnuts.
Additionally, along with their sister venue, Thievery, a the Middle Eastern-centric eatery in Glebe, they’ve produced a collaborative menu featuring such things as a Halal snack pack and kebab, both with Butter’s fried chicken.

FRANCA BRASSERIE + BOULANGERIE AND MARKET
Cuisine: Contemporary brasserie serving French and European influenced cuisine
Forget your vision of quick-mix cakes and brownies laid out on rickety trestle tables, Franca Brasserie’s pastry chef Travin De Hoedt has kicked the humble bake-sale up a notch. Way up.
Come Saturday 8am, large tables, wooden crates and long tablecloths are brought out on the empty terrace where they’re cleverly styled to display an abundance of sweet and savoury pastries that’d colour Marie Antoinette impressed.
At one end sits plates and pedestals of quiches, baguettes and cheesy garlic scrolls followed by a long stretch of chocolate tarts, coffee brulee, passionfruit cakes and almond croissants.
In total, Travin notes that there are about 25-30 different types of pastries that are brought out, not including the freshly-baked bread and rustic sandwiches.
While Potts Pointers are keen to pick up a treat – they tend to sell out of all 600 items before noon, the same on Sunday – Travin says that there are other benefits as well. So that none of their stock goes to waste, he says they are “using what’s already in the kitchen”.
Based on that, he’ll figure out what to make, and considering the items don’t appear on Franca’s normal menu, it allows him to be creative, which is good when you’re not in the kitchen all day.
He’s also quite pleased that between their takeaway menu, wine selection and bake sales, Franca has been able to retain all its staff, which is a good thing to know as it sort of takes away the guilt of that second chocolate and raspberry muffin.
Now that the sweets are sorted check out the Brasserie’s breakfast, lunch and dinner menu as well as their fantastic wine and cocktail selection.
For takeaway, pre-order for pick-up. Delivery available via website, UberEats and Deliveroo.

CHARGRILL CHARLIE’S / KEPOS STREET KITCHEN
Great food and great service are paramount in the restaurant industry, but to get a true indication of the brains behind the business, look no further than the menu itself.
At the heart of Chargrill Charlie’s, a go-to for scrumptious grilled chicken since 1989, is family.
It’s still a family-run operation, it still features family meal deals, and like any loving household, there’s always room for one more at the table. It’s that ethos that led to the launch of Local Flavours, an initiative to help hospitality businesses affected by COVID-19 by using Chargrill Charlie’s own stores as a means for struggling restaurants and cafes to continue trading – be it takeaway meals or specialty food items.
Fans of Redfern’s Kepos Street Kitchen will be delighted to hear that favourites from this modern Israeli restaurant are now available for takeaway and delivery from a number of the chicken shop’s Sydney-area outlets including Wahroonga, Willoughby, Rose Bay, and Woollahra.
The menu will feature such popular items as the Middle Eastern wagyu kofta, homemade falafels and Kepos meatballs.
There’ll be more locations, and participating eateries coming soon so keep on the lookout for further announcements.
Order takeaway by downloading the Chargrill Charlie’s app, while delivery is available via UberEats and Deliveroo.
Visit chargrillcharlies.com.au for locations, hours and contact information.
BENTLEY GROUP AT HOME
While dining out on date night may be on hold, there’s nothing to stop you from getting all gussied up for a gourmet meal from an award-winning restaurant.
To Brent Savage, chef and co-owner of the Bentley Group, being indoors shouldn’t necessarily mean you need to forego a fine-dining experience.
With that in mind, the team have developed four distinct menus, one from each of their hatted-restaurants: Bentley Restaurant + Bar, Monopole, Yellow and Cirrus.
Each element of each meal reflects the unique aspects of each establishment, staying true to its respective specialty quality, flavour and presentation.
From Yellow, there is a full vegan menu, Bentley features Wagyu beef cheek, Monopole features its pork terrine and smoked chicken with bread stuffing and Cirrus’ meal features trout rillettes.
The menus range from $75 to $110 for two people, and since you won’t be hitting the road, have sommelier, and co-owner Nick Hildebrandt recommend some wine pairings or a cocktail.

BLUE EYE DRAGON
Cuisine: Taiwanese/Chinese
There is an aura of tradition and respect at this Taiwanese/Chinese restaurant. It’s not necessarily the imposing Blue Eye Dragon-adorned iron gate, nor the lofty converted church hall, but in the kitchen where Jade Chen makes nearly 1000 dumplings a day; each one identical to the next and served piping hot to each guest.
Regulars though have started to become partial to the colder ones.
“Our frozen dumplings are flying out the door, and we can’t make them fast enough,” says Muriel Chen.
“My mother insists she will make all of them even though some of our staff and myself are capable of wrapping the dumplings.”
The DIY Dumpling Pack is an ideal option for eating in isolation as it both entertains the kids and ensures they have something healthy to eat.
To make it a full meal, add a few of their other signature dishes including the beef pancakes, pork belly, beef eye fillet and prawns in House XO sauce.
Muriel adds: “When the shutdown happened, we immediately posted on our social media to advise that we are still open. Our regulars have come in force to help us. I have always said that with all this globalisation for big corporates, localisation will be the key to survival for small business that relies on community support and the Pyrmont community has definitely shown us their support.”
Blue Eye Dragon also has a wide radius for deliveries now that they’re doing it themselves and as a result they have managed to keep all their staff at full-pay even though it’s at reduced hours.

BELLS LINE EATS
Cuisine: Modern Australian cafe, upscale bistro and fine-dining
There is strength in numbers and for three Blue Mountains eateries, joining forces to create Bells Line Eats is all part of their battle plan to address the hospitality industry’s COVID-19 related crisis.
“The three businesses (Kravings Restaurant, North Cafe and Pitt Lane Bistro) had built talented and loyal teams,” Evan Frost, the creator and manager of Bells Line Eats, says.
“We wanted to provide them with every opportunity of being employed and doing the things they love.
“We figured there was more chance of this being sustainable if we combined forces.”
What started as a mere idea between them, became more of a necessity “as things progressed and more and more people became housebound”.
“We wanted to provide an affordable service which had the dual merits of keeping the team engaged but also providing people in the community with dining options to keep things as normal as possible,” he says.
“If they can’t come to us, then we will take it to them.”
Besides being experienced restaurateurs, each business brought something different to the table – from the fine-dining seafood, steak element of Kravings, up-market pub-grub from Pitt Lane Bistro and sandwiches, rolls and coffees from North Cafe.
Evan adds: “All of the burgers and chicken dishes are very popular. Steaks are a constant, and there is a lot of positive feedback on pork belly, lamb cutlets and a beer-battered barramundi.”

CUP & COOK
In tough times, we turn to family, but for the crew at this neighbourhood cafe that may get a tick crowded as they pretty much consider one another and countless locals to be close kin.
For co-owner Bianca Di Marco, that’s a burden she and her fellow co-owners (husband head chef, Charles Di Marco along with married duo, Matt and Jansci Oxenham) are willing to bare seeing that they created Cup & Cook as “a place where families, friends, work colleagues and young folks can meet and enjoy great food and coffee”, Bianca says.
However, now that customers aren’t able to take a table and hang around for a chinwag, she and her team have at least appeased the culinary part and developed a takeaway menu featuring house favourites including their signature salmon salad and power veg bowl.
To ensure that whole brood is kept healthy and happy, a choice of two different family-sized meals will also be on offer.
The selection, which will change regularly, will range from hearty soups to pasta dishes, plus vegetarian options will be posted on Facebook and Instagram at the start of the week.
“We are truly blessed by the community that surrounds us,” Bianca says.
“Our approach to the business at this time is to take it day-by-day …. working out how we can best serve our loyal community, keep our staff employed and ensure everyone is safe.”
The cafe and eatery is in the waterside suburb of Kyle Bay, and still offers coffee, all-day breakfasts and a lunch menu inspired by clean eating and seasonal produce.

GLASS CAFE
Cuisine: Modern Australian takeaway meals from products sourced throughout the Southern Highlands region
A regular at the weekly markets, Glass Cafe’s owner, Leanne Ferreira is always on the lookout for local products she can incorporate into the menu, the most notable of which has been the inclusion of the lean and healthy alpaca meat.
It was something different and it worked. Now, like so many other businesses adapting to the shift in dining options, she’s had to adjust, which means she’s had to put the alpaca dishes on hold, not only because it became hard to source, but also that has to be prepared quite carefully so best served at the cafe.
“We have moved away from a signature dish but held onto our signature of sourcing within our local area,” says Leanne.
In addition to generous pre-cooked takeaway meals, some yummy desserts (such as a chocolate butter pudding to take home and bake), she’s organised her own mini-market.
On Fridays and Saturdays, you’ll can swing by to pick up locally sourced items ranging from milko fresh vegetables, local wines, beer & cider, fresh seafood and even a locally-produce hand sanitiser.
“I always liked the corner fruit shop as a kid, maybe this is what we will become,” she says.

ZIPPOLI CAFE AND DESSERT BAR
Cuisine: Authentic Southern Italian food … and the famous Zippoli dessert
Sure, deep-fried Italian doughnuts are nice enough, but when Anthony Furfaro, owner of Zippoli Cafe and Dessert Bar began filling them with the likes of Nutella and caramel custard, he took it to the next level and his sweet Zippolis became legendary.
It’s not surprising then that since people’s restaurant habits have had to shift so radically, he was able to swiftly pull together takeaway family-sized meals on par with dining experience.
“In this times of uncertainty we need to adapt to new ways to retaining customers and gaining new customers,” says Anthony noting that not only is it good for business but also “to ensure that we can come out the other end of this pandemic as the resilient generation and have a story to tell the next generation”.
The specials they’re offering such as the $79 ‘Family of 4 Dinner’ and lasagnes sized for either three or eight servings along with personalised delivery, are relatively new for Zippoli and were “started especially for the older generation as they aren’t too familiar with online ordering and this gives us a way to interact with our regular customers and new customers that have ordered online”.

“Trying new ideas and recipes during this time and reflecting on customer feedback for future menu options.”

At Koku Culture, owners Kenji and Donna have combined their cumulative 30 years of culinary experience and combined “traditional Japanese techniques with rich cultured flavours and the best quality local and seasonal ingredients” to create unique Australian Japanese food and drinks.

There’s something so satisfying and comforting about sharing a big bowl of Pasta Mare Bianco or Salsicce Pizza with the whole family.
“Our food has always been simple, freshly made and easy to change as we make our meals from scratch whereas previously we would pride ourselves on a fantastic all-round dining experience, that has now shifted to focus 100 per cent on our food only,” owner John Cross says.

AZZURRO 753
Cuisine: Italian cuisine
A trip to Italy may be off the books for a bit, but that doesn’t mean you have to take a pass on an Italian experience, when all you need to take is a quick trip to Walsh Bay.
At Azzurro, the emphasis is on Rome, particularly their signature item, Pinsa Romana, a type of Roman pizza that’s crisp on the outside but remains fluffy in the middle.
It’s a favourite amongst locals and in these chaotic times, Sara Caltavituro, Azzurro’s co-owner feels it’s important for her customers to have something familiar.
“Customers need to perceive that something in their reality is not changing. Letting them know that their favourite food, that smiley face behind the counter are still there right now and will be there once this will be over is of paramount importance,” Sara says.
Azzurro is also selling their handmade pastas and sauces separately so customers can cook it at home at their leisure and, as Sara adds, “so that the link with us won’t break easily”.
