A disgruntled shopper has called out a major supermarket after noticing a huge issue with his mince.
The clip, shared to X by @clowndownunder, showed a man weighing his beef mince that he’d purchased from Aldi.
The mince — which was supposed to be 500 grams — was almost 100 grams off of that.
“I just bought some mince from Aldi, it’s saying 500 grams on the packet. But, actually weighing it, 412 grams,” the man said.
“What the hell, Aldi.”
It was posted to X with the caption: “Australia, boycott Aldi.”
Several social media users were also unimpressed with the man’s revelation.
“No way Aldi – almost 100g difference,” one social media user commented on the clip.
Another added: “Another reason to go to your local butcher where it is weighed up in front of you.”
One said they’ve had a similar experience, while others pointed out that the scales at the X user’s home may not be entirely accurate, and others mentioned the “e” written on the packaging meant it was an estimate.
“The ‘e’ next to the weight designates ‘estimate’. They all do it. Should not be permitted if it’s that far below the number,” one said.
Another added: “The magic ‘e’ indicates the actual weight will be less than advertised. Theoretically, it means the weight could be either under or over. Yeah, that makes me laugh too.”
“All the major supermarkets do the same thing, the e is an estimate. Measured out mince from Woolworths, it was also significantly under. Wait till you learn how much liquid is packaged with the meat,” one said.
News.com.au understands that Aldi’s supplier partner has systems in place that weighs the products and any that don’t meet standards are rejected.
Anyone with issues with a product can return the product for a full refund or replacement.
Aldi isn’t the only supermarket to have been called out over this issue, with a Woolworths customer expressing frustration earlier this year and took to social media to slam Woolworths at Delacombe Town Centre near Ballarat after claiming he got only 784 grams of mince when he’d actually purchased a kilogram.
However, the customer was offered a refund.
“All of our prepacked meat products are checked for their weight on scales that have been certified for trade use.
“If ever our customers are concerned about the weight of a product, we’d encourage them to return it to our store. This not only allows us to issue a refund, but also helps to ensure we have the product details we need to investigate further.”
Next to where Woolworths advertises the meat’s weight is has an “e” symbol. The “e” symbol is on thousands of prepackaged products such as meat and is part of the internationally agreed upon Average Quantity System.
Prepacked products are regularly inspected by the National Measurement Institute and there are consequences for breaches.
